What is the best way to fertilize perennials, and how often? Is it March, June & October? I'm confused - I have heard in the past every two/three weeks or so. And - I've heard an awful lot about fish emulsion and seaweed...I used a granular product called 'Texas Tee' yesterday, hoping it is good stuff. What about lava sand or green sand....and the product 'superthrive'? I know - lots of questions!
Organic Fertlizing Schedule?
Wow Pam, you've gotten a lot of hits on this one! LOL... Their are several ways to organically fertilize your perennials. Use 4 to 6 inches of compost and work that into your soil Spring and Fall, when there is less foliage to block your ability to really get it worked in. Mulch is the single most important thing you can do for your plants. It helps maintain even temperature and moiture levels in your soil, helps control weeds and pests, thus reducing the stress to your plants. Its important to maintain the the beneficial organisms living in your soil, and chemical fertilizer salts destroy them. The organisms help enrich the soil by aerating the soil, fertilizing it with their waste, etc. When you eliminate these guys, you have to fertilize more frequently...becomes a viscious (expensive) cycle. I have had good success with a tonic I mix myself and feed once a week:
one gallon of water
one tbs of liquid seaweed
one tbs H202
two tbs of agricultural molasses
1/4 tsp of Super Thrive
1 - 2 drops of pure tea tree oil...
Hope this is helpful :)
