HI Marie, do you think it looks anything like this? Black Bat Plant, Tacca Chanterii.

imzadi,

I think you're looking for Cuphea llavea, sometimes called Bat Face Cuphea, Cuphea Tiny Mice, or St. Peter's Plant. I grew one last year. Unfortunately, mine ended up with a really bad aphid infestation and I didn't get much in the way of seeds. It's a short sprawling tender perennial Mexican native that likes part sun and warm temps.

The flowers are nice; but, small. Nothing so spectacular as Molly's Black Bat Plant.

that is a great picture Molly. the one i am looking for according to my daughter is the one Eje posted.

i cant get my seeds to germinate for the ones Molly has. I ordered some actual plants off the co op.

now hopefully i can find some of the bat faced plants. thanks marie

I got plants from Select Seeds Antique Flowers two years ago but I don't see them in this year's catalogue. (I didn't water my plants enough last summer and they died. Bummer...)

They carried them as 1 gal plants around here last summer at HD and others.

So Marie, you are collecting "Bat" theme plants? Very interesting and exotic.

i guess i am as i have a plant someone gave me called bat ears. i dont know the real name as te thing hasnt flowered yet in the two years i have had it.

i think it might be neat to see how many people can name bat themed plants.

does anyone have seeds to the above? i cant seem to find any on the net. maybe have to go ebaying. hehe

Here is a neat white bat plant

I had two of the batface cuphea last year. I loved it! Small blooms, but bright, deep red and purple, and continuously. Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll have one this year. I planted one in the ground and one in a pot in case the one in the ground didn't make it through winter. Well!!!!! The one in the pot died! The one in the ground kept right on blooming, but as of yet I have not seen any signs of life. But I'm still hoping as the other cuphea (firecracker) is just beginning to show some shoots.

Let me check and see how many seeds I have. I sent some to someone last winter and am not sure how many are left. I want to save a few for myself; but, will be glad to send you whatever I have to spare.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Thanks so much.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

thanks let me know if you do have a few to spare. if not thats okay too.

gingerlily, I only have enough to send some to imzadi. I promise to try to save more this year!

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

I received a free pack of these in an order from Parks...I sowed them outside last week and they are already up.. We'll see if they get to full size plants..Sure did germinate easily..

Okay, no problem. I just misunderstood who you were responding to.

Larkie, Did you see jazmama's photo in the Plantsdatabase? Estimating from the sizes I know of the flowers around it, it looks like hers grew to be about 3' tall by 4' wide. I had no idea this plant could get that big!

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

They will get that tall here in GA..I had one several years ago, it got pretty big.....The winter killed it outside..If these make it I will try to over winter at least one.
