ZZ propagation

Crystal Lake, IL

Now that I'm the proud owner of a Zamioculcas zamiifolia, (Thank you, Sansman) naturally I'd like to propagate it. From other discussions, I've gathered that working from leaves, rather than stem cuttings, is the way to go. This is fine with me, as I would be willing to remove a leaf or two, but not to amputate one of those gorgeous stalks.

However, the leaves seem to blend so seamlessly into the stalks. Where do I separate them, and how do I go about it?

Just pluck it off Karen (that's the technical term :).

Just let it sit out for a day or two, then put it stem side down into moist, loose soil, teeny plastic pot. I would cover with a baggie for the first two weeks, then alternate the baggie on and off for the next 4 weeks. Slow process, but if you keep it in a warm place that i sbrightly lit, you will be surprised with new plantlets in 6 months or so.
I have three that have taken a year, but it's becuase they are in a cool position (were in north window during most of the winter).

Cheers!

Has anyone tried growing a ZZ from tuber? I'm doing it now & it seems even *slower* than by propping a leaf. I found the tuber at home marked ZZ, so I potted it up in Sept. I now have abt 1" of stem along w/ 1" of unfurled leaf shoot (looks like it might have 3-4 leaves inside it).

Anyone else have experience w/ growing from tuber rather than leaf?
