How cold?

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Almost all my outside brugs are coming up. How cold can they take? Also if they get knocked down the will send up more shoots won't they? I sure hope so. That is the problem when it gets so warm then turns cold. I sure hope this is our last cold spell & we don't lose everything that is coming up.
It is 46° now but is supposed to go to the lower 30s Wed. nite I don't see how I can protect everything.

Are they still low to the ground? I had lots that stayed out this last winter and I notice the ones that were tall got much more frost damage than the ones that were short. None died and it did get down to the low 30s a few nights. I also threw sheets and towels over lots of my tropials a few of the coldest nights, and that really helped! Leaves seemed to go first, few stems got frost bite.

Good Luck!

Kell They are just popping up. I think I will throw a sheet over the pink one I like best & a few others. It would sure be better if they were in a group..I could cover them easier. Mine die completely down in the winter & come back from the roots. Most of mine are just named Yellow brug.. pink brug & white brug *G*
I have cutting in the greenhouse of them. A couple of the cuttings already have a Y. Mother nature can sure be cruel sometimes *LOL*

I bet they do well. I have heard that sometimes the cuttings you take to winter them over actually grow faster and bloom better then the ones that are recovereing from the cold in the ground!

I would cover any you are in love with!

Hi Darlene! Good to hear from you. Sounds like Kell gave you some good advice. I am not sure if you were in Florida about fifteen years ago, but it snowed here on the Caost in April. We could not believe it. So beware, we may still have some frost. I put a water sprinkler out and let it spray my brugs when I think a frost is coming - works every time to protect plants.

Thanks kell..But I love them all :)
Roz I planted some of my seeds but when I found we were going to have a chance to spend most of the summer..( May 20 - maybe as late as Sept 15.. Lord willing) in Alaska & all over I quit planting. I know my garden will suffer something terrible while we are gone but can't pass this chance up. The price for the trip is right too.. basically free. Homer will be helping with the driving of the motor home. I'm gonna sure be needing seeds & plants next year. I'll save a few seedlings & have auto watering for them but between friends at church & Florala I'll give most to good homes. I have only been in FL for just under 4 years.
I think a sprinkler would be out of the question as I would need several & don't even have one now.
Well better go & get prepared to cover them in case.

Sugar, the main thing is to water when it's gonna be cool will help keep the ground warmer helps prevent stress if the ground is too dry. a light frost never hurts my plants this time of year, even seedlings.

Arlene it is too late for me to water now but the ground & pots seem to be pretty damp. I covered them all with sheets & weighted them down best I could. The wind is sure blowing though. I think tomorrow will be the coldest nite. I'll sure cover them tomorrow nite. The kittens think my sheets are tents so hope they don't mess it up. They sure like it in my garden. I wish they didn't.

Good luck!! And send us pictures from Alaska. I always wanted to go there to eat all the fresh salmon right out of the water! YUM! LOL
