MY 15 Dat babies

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Hi, All -

Thought I would share a pic of my 15 Datura babies I started from seed right after Christmas. There are several kinds - mostly double, triple and quad - colors purple, yellow, white and cream.

I now have over 100 seedlings started under my two grow light stands in my heated basement. Just potted up 15 Cannas into 2 gallon nursery containers yesterday (they are about 4" tall now) and lined them up on 4 shelves with more florescents hanging over them. It's getting to be a jungle down there - Spring better get here soon. :-)

Looking good. I hope you have a lot of yard or lots of good friends. Congrats on such good germination.

What are you going to do with all your babies? Was it hard to get them going from seed?

No, it was not difficult to start at all. I started 25 seeds in peat pellets in a covered container on a heat mat the week after Christmas under florescent lights 18 hours a day. The soil temp was held at 80 degrees. I had first germination in 5 days - 20 of the 25 seeds had sprouted by day 15. Around day 8 - I took them off the heat mat and removed the cover. They all did great till one weekend I was shooting a wedding (I'm also a part time photographer) and forgot to check on them several of them dried out and I lost them :-(

The rest have been doing GREAT.

As for yard space - yes, I have plenty - 5 acres (mostly wooded_ but nice areas of sun around a frog pond and our patio is nice and sunny. I will still end up giving some away though - not for lack of space - but because I am worried I won't have the time to keep all my plants watered seeing as I work full time during the week and do photography on the side. My husband is clearing trees this Spring and will begin construction of a new garden for me. YEAH! It will be about 50 x 50 feet and were going to surround it with Wrought iron fencing and design a garden swing seating area in it. Next year..I will be in garden heaven!

Sounds wonderful. Wish I had a place like that instead of sitting up here on top of a windy hill with one sunny spot and dappled shade every place else. Hope you will take summer pictures.

Your seedlings look great. I am so glad that you have many that germinated. Your place will be lovely. What a great job you have done. I planted datura . . no bottom heat and they have not come up yet and I planted a month ago. I am still hoping now that it is getting warmer during the day.

Sounds like your gardens will be lovely. Post lots of pictures for us when you get them going. We Like pictures!!

I just planted a few dats a couple of days ago. I'm wondering what I'll get for germination. Some of the seeds were a couple of years old.
