ok..
i'm a bad bad kitty
lol
i was just reading about these.. and how they're pretty easy to root from cuttings
i didnt think they would be, for some reason..
but i've decided to try to root a piece of one...
so, under the cover of darkness i just wandered over to my neighbor's and snipped a piece off of the massively huge (it's about as tall as my house) philodendron that's been there for 15 years lol
do i just put it in water...or...?
giant split leafed philo?
I have no clue, but next time you are bad, write for my address! LOL Seriously, those plants are awesome! It kills me that some of you warm zoners can leave 'houseplants' out year round. :)
Are you talking about this plant?
Monstera deliciosa

Basically any of these can be started in water or just stick it in moist soil and it should do its thing. Early on they are sometimes slow to get established, but give it a year and it will perform for you. Should be planted in indirect light/semi-shade when young and will have much better color and leaf texture if given some relief from full sun.
Drool, drool! I love those.
Chele, I've got a 7'er at the house if you need a start.
That is funny! For a second, I almost told miss kitty to ask you about starting them then I wasn't sure if that was one you had or not. I was thinking it greeted me by the front door on a visit.
Hi Kitty,
Is this the Philodendron you have?
http://plantsdatabase.com/go/37036/index.html
I've started cuttings of these in pots. They may be a little slow to start rooting so trim off most of its leaves. Otherwise, its an easy one.
8^)
well this is like an 8-10 footer that's been in the ground for about 15 years
lol
but it's not the one in the pdb
the leaves are split all the way through to the edges
hrm..i'd scan a leaf in, but i think the smallest leaves are bigger than my scanner is
lol
i think if this thing gets started, i'm gonna put it in the corner of my shady area...
or trade it off to someone, if anyone's interested
either/or :)
lol
they cut it down!!!
lol
i do hope my cuttings make it, now...
i figured if they didnt, i could just go take more..
but yesterday, i looked over there.. and the thing's gone
that giant philo that's been there for like.. 10-15 years... there's like.. no sign it was ever there
lol
kinda creepy, cuz no one even noticed they were removing it...
almost like they snuck it off or something
it was there in the morning, then that evening.. it was *GONE*
not sitting out on the curb for the garbage people.. or anything
there isnt even a hole in the garden where it once was..
kind of bizarre
anyway, i just felt the need to do a mini-rant on that subject :)
it was this variety, i belive
http://plantsdatabase.com/showpicture/4682/
i'm *really* hoping the pieces i took make it!
nope.. i already peeped over the fence
lol
they didnt move it
they completely tilled up a whole bed of plants.. without even digging them up..
just tilled everything under
and chopped up the philo...
there's runners everywhere that were "bleeding" alll over the place...
and a few chopped up leaves..
i think they stuffed it in the trash..
heh
people are strange!
they managed to till everything up .. and stuff without us even hearing them.. and we were in the back yard just about all day that day
kinda bizarre
hehe
Good grief, looks like they would have offered it to the neighbors! I wanted to dig up a tree that I didn't like to replace with a flowering one, so I asked the neighbors if anybody wanted it. I hate to just throw plants away.
Calalily, I saw those plants in Florida everywhere. Our hotels yard in Orlando was full of them.
They are nice when you keep them outdoors. They look totally different than indoors.
i really was hoping that if they got rid of those plants that they would ask if we wanted them
i mean.. they're always popping their heads over the fence to annoy us... why couldnt they have popped their heads over the fence and asked if we wanted some plants...
or.. maybe popped up and asked us why were letting our azalea bush grow over the sidewalk, instead of taking it upon themselves to whack it back right before it bloomed and do a *BAD* pruning job(yes, i've got a few things to rant about these people.. lol)
nobody uses the sidewalk, everyone who walks.. walks in the street anyway, so it's never been a problem for the azalea (it's like 30 years old) to grow and spill over onto the sidewalk...the people who lived there before them used to *fertilize* the azalea.. because it's planted right on the property line.. but still on our side... and they really liked it and thought it was pretty (which it is..)
anyway... enough of my ranting for now :)
they *did* trash the philo
but they saved a couple of pieces of it
i went over and talked to them today
lol
they got rid of that whole bed .. so they could plant 2 crepe myrtles there...
anyway
i questioned them about the philo.. and they were like "what's a philodendron?" so i told them it was the big elephant ear looking thing they cut down..
and they said that it was harboring copperheads and rattlesnakes so they cut it down
i doubt that the philo is what was causing the snakes to be there, since we've got lots of them in our yard too (they dont bother us, really..).. but anyway....that's their reasoning for getting rid of it
they chopped off all of the leaves and threw them away, and saved 2 big chunks of the stalk (trunk?) with roots and everything still attached, and they gave one of them to me!
they're gonna put the other one in a place in the back yard.. and were gonna just throw the other one away if they didnt find a home for it
they also offered me some daylilies from the bed in the back that they're tearing up..
so now i've got a chunk of philodendron with roots and no leaves..
lol
if my cuttings make it, i'll have several..
will definitely have one to trade if they all make it, and anyone's interested..
Oh that's so good that they saved a piece for you! It should grow pretty fast.
oh i hope so
hehe
yep
the piece of philo that the neighbors gave me is growing well..
it's unfurled a new leaf, and appears to be quite happy
now i'm trying to figure out where i'm going to plant it! lol
it's been living in a bucket of water (where most of my homeless plants that can take a lot of water end up while i figure out where i'm going to put them..)
i really need to get my beds built, but that requires lots of hauling of debris (bricks mostly) and have next to no time to do that with a 1 year old running around
lol
i have to do most of my computering and garden work when he's sleeping, and i seem to be doing more computering than garden work here lately
anyways...
if anyone wants a piece of philo, i'm fairly certain i'll have an extra one for trade or something..
we bought a digital camera that should be arriving in the next couple of weeks so i should be able to post pictures of *EVERYTHING* for those who want to see the philo..
lol
