How to control fur matts in outside barn cat

Hello,
I have a beautiful barn cat, "Feather", with the longest, silkiest, finest fur. The photo of her is from this past fall...as of Friday, we had to shave her whole neck & part of chest due to horrible mats. Can anyone recommend a specific type of comb/brush or product to keep her fur from matting?
