school project update

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i had all the dirt in the little cups named what flowers and everything ready to start planting. i got one class up and running and boom!!!

all projects put on hold for whole school. new principle old one fired still dont know why. so all projects on hold till now.

so we are fixing to do this and then i will have more pics.

the class that got to do it was doing good. lost three over christmas but they did so well. well we got them going good under lights and fertilizing and everything. planted them a month ago and yep the storm of ice and snow came. killed them all. the kids were devestated. well i plan to let them do it this round too but they dont get a grade as theirs was already given. .

okay how we did this.

and i plan to make a few changes in this round.
we used styrofom cups the white ones. next time i plan to use clear ones. that way the kids can see the roots and easiier to see all the things going in in this cup.

now what we did was let the kids if they had money buy their own seeds from where ever and told them when they had to have it here.

alot of them since we have computers wanted to buy off ebay (which was a learning expierence in its own right).

so we did. the ones who couldnt afford it i made up some differences and asked here for donations.

okay once we got all the seeds since it was around christmas time we let the kids (35 kids as only one class got to do this so far)plant them and take them home with the parents signing a paper as to not to help. if it dies it dies. learning here.

three dies due to too much water or not enough or just plain neglect.

i recommend this project for other teachers as it is a learning expierence.

first the buying part of it. the spending of money.

second the growing part (science here)

the last part is learning not everything turns out the way you want it to. seeds dont always germinate.

i do have a few pics but rather wait till you can see all of the pics step by step.

as with the holidays i didnt get too take too many.

i labled each cup with name class and plant type.

we are planning to put them all under different lighting conditions. (shade window light just the clas light things like this.) the ones who did do this the light really didnt make to much a difference in the class. at home they could of easily put them in a window.

so this second shot at this will be done here at school.

the biggest problem i had with the 35 kids is everyone wanted to touch each others. and the famed question is it growing yet.

so we will start this second round now thet we can next monday. will take pictures of them and show everyone their progress.

Your class projects have to approved by the principal?

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

yep. our field trips also have to be too. the only thing that doesnt have to be approved is the state stuff for all schools. like science projects and essays the state says all schools have to do. the rest has to be approved.

i know i was shocked when i started here that these things have to be okayed.

another shocker. we have to pay a school fee for our kids to go to school. i paid like 50 dollars for my daughter to go to school plus supplies.

I am looking forward to the pictures, I am sure they will be great!
To bad that your project had to be delayed. Isn't there a Parent Teacher association that could assist with the purchase of the seeds?
Although as I remember those kids wanted some pretty exotic seeds and I am sure the PTA would have only wanted them to have ordinary stuff!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

yes they did want some different things.

the parents did give alot of them a allowance but the school here are such penny pinchers. its awful.

shoot we are lucky to get any money from the sales the kids have. it took the elemantary school 3 years to get computers for every room.

its bad here and we pay for it. hopefully next year will be a little better as i change schools along with my daughter as we have bought new house in a new town.

its awful we have to pay for our kids to go to school here too.

but its home i guess. heheh

I would think maybe it would be better for the kids to keep the cups at school until they are ready to plant out? It would be a better way to be sure they were being taken care of consistently without too much attention.
Are the teachers willing to do this or is that the reason why they were taken home?
Can you get by the principal by just getting the cups ready and giving each child a couple seeds to put in there cup when they get home.
I hate it when principals invoke goofy rules and always try to find ways around them without breaking them completely!
Shared this with the two teachers that were interested and we may try to do a couple projects here.
I have so many seeds from all of the generous people here that I have more than enough to do this with.

well the thing with the one class is the holidays were coming which is a two week period and no one would of been there to take care of them.

this round all will be kept at school. even over the wekends.

it wasnt that the principal ssid no its just that they changed principles and and wanted to wait till this one got settled in. i still dont know what happened here with the old one but it was major and hush hush.

all projects got the go last week. science fair was this week so ours starts next week.

moved this to the general board .
