Questions for Lotus Growers

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Did you purchase your tuber on-line? From where? Good quality? Bloom the first year? Planted it in what and how?

Here's why I'm asking. I'll purchase a lotus tuber online..that's not a problem. And I don't mind paying extra for a good quality plant/tuber. Matter of fact, I'll pay for one that's already planted to save me that grief. I'd really like to get one for a small bowl or planter. I have several bowls/planters I could put it in. Which brings me to another question: Can you plant them directly into the bowl/planter instead of in a pot?

Sorry so many questions but I'd rather hear from experienced growers than ask a complete stranger through a store.

Thank you in advance..

I bought plants this past month from Stephanie (Waterpondfarm) of DG's and can't say enough about the service or the quality of the plants she sent me.

I got 3 of them last year from http://www.ewaterlily.com/ Their prices were the best I found last year but I was quite pleased with the lotus's.

They were big, healthy tubers and bloomed for me through the summer. They made lots of new tubers too. I will be buying from them again this year if I ever get around to ordering (my lotus were all killed in the hurricane/flood last fall)

You could plant it directly in the bowl planter, but some of those "small" vareities aren't really small tubers, just small in height and or flower.

I got all tall big flower varieties and panted them in half whiskey barrels. The barrels were completely full of new tubers by the end of the summer.

Ditto to ewaterlily.com, great prices and really nice stuff.

I made lily bogs for mine. I dug a hole 3 ft. deep, about 4' across and circular. I put in the liner (roofing liner because it's cheaper than pond liner) and put most of the dirt back in. Fill it with water and leave about 3" of standing water. I kept mosquito dunks in it throughout the summer. They overwinter well this way in zone 5. Here a a link that should be helpful from an old archive of The Plant Place. I hope it works!

This is exactly what I was hoping for......thanks big time!!

branka, I just might duplicate what you did.

I remember Branka telling us last year they had to go in a round container or a round hole because they were stupid LOL...If they reached a corner, they didn't know what to do.

The bogs work very well, if I can find the picture I'll post it for you. The problem that I had was my dog eating the lotus tubers. I have two bogs one is established so I think it it fine. The other I purchased tubers twice last summer and the at them before they had a chance to take. We finally put fido fence around the landscaping to salvage what we has left.

If you order from ewaterlily, get your order in early, they sell out so fast.

Hi: I'm new to this thread. I just ordered a bunch of stuff from ewaterlily.com as after looking around, their prices really are good. I'm trying a couple of lotus and a Georgia Peach lily. Have any of you used the "squat pots" from this source instead of just going to Wal-Mart for pots? I ordered some and am hoping they are worth the expense. We're moving a small pond in a shady spot to a larger, sunnier spot. Too many leaves and no blooms in the shade.

I grew mine in plain old cheap unscented cat litter. They grew and grew and grew!!!Then a lot cleaner and easier to divid them in the spring. I had Mrs. Perry Slocum variety. :-)

Eclipse: How did you keep the kitty litter from floating in your pot? I just got 3 plants, 2 lotus and 1 lily. Would all of these work in kitty litter? I just filled my pots with dirt but haven't put the plants in yet--I may change my mind!
