Photoshop Slide Scanning

Anyone out there use Photoshop 7?? I use a Canon 5000F scanner, and have happily been scanning old slides for a few weeks. Now all of a sudden, when the slides get scanned, they come up very dark and require a lot of fiddling to lighten them up and get correct color. I'm pretty sure it is Photoshop and not the scanner, as I have tried some other pictures that are already on my computer, and when I open them in Photoshop, they are very dark. Just wondering if I have somehow changed a setting somewhere. Just don't know which way to turn on this.
