I have never seen this salvia before. The bloom has white on it similar to the eyelash sage. I think that the white makes the blooms stand out more than when the blooms are solid red. You must have taken the photo on one of our rainy days this week. Indeed we have been blessed lately. We should have a nice spring wildflower crop this year. I was really worried about the wildflowers when we did not receive any rain for so long. Nice photo and thanks for sharing it.

Hi Hazel -- thank you! I bought several of these back in the fall at Schumacher's Hill Country Gardens in New Braunfels, and have just been holding it to plant this spring. Guess its happy right now! I apologize for the photo quality -- its a solid red flower with white anthers. The leaves are semi-glossy dark green on top with purple undersides. Its really a beautiful plant, and I believe will look much like the ruellia brittoniana in shape and size, when mature. Plenty of rain here. I need a break from it! You have a great day!!! Gretchen

Hazel: I owe you an apology! While out in the GH today, I took a closer look at the flowers and you are right -- the inner sides of the petals are a cream color! I'll be darned...

Gretchen, the white is was talking about was the antlers. I did not know it had cream on the inner side of the petals. No apology is necessary. Wow, did we have a storm come through here this afternoon. Did you have a lot of wind there too?

Yes, it was black and ugly. I was worried the GH might blow away, but thankfully no damage, whew! Hope its behind us for a while!!!
