Another thought

With all the concerns the last few days of SB, I thought another thing we should talk about is, companion (sp?) plants. It is not a good idea to plant many things with or around your brugmansia, as they carry to same diseases. There are a few I knew, but there are many I had never thought of. Datura a biggy, but also you shouldn't plant tomatoes, or should I say don't plant those were a tomato plant has been. Monika what are some other things we should avoid?

Good thought Tracey. But so many do plant datura near their brugs and seem to have no problem.

Has anyone had a problem? Viruses can be deadly also.

Daturas 'catches' virus just as easy as Brugmansias but I have never heard of problems with planting Brugmansias, Daturas, Tomatos or Potatos as companion plants.
In Germany, Daturas, Tomatos or potatos are grown every year out of seeds, or seed-potatos, which are certified that they are free of Virus or any other diseases. The same goes for annuals. I have never seen SB on annuals or perennials, I use or have used for underplanting.
On my gallows or in the winterhouse, where the plants are standing that close, that they touch each other, I have never noticed, that SB goes over by itself to plants, which can be considered as not prone to it.
SB was unknown in Germany until 1995. I know for sure, that it is carried into a collection with infected plants or cuttings and then spreads. I lost a many old and new yellow Multis to it: Habanera I + 2, Feingold, Goldtraum, Charles Grimaldi, Jamaican Yellow, Dr. Suess, Bolero I, Inca Sun, Whiskers, Golden Yellow, Charming, Mittagssonne, Herzensbrücke, Golden Sunset and the list will continues.........I know of friends, which didnt trade at all and the named plants are still healthy growing in their gardens. While my old CG Tree died of it, a cutting, raised from that Tree several years before the outbreak happened, is now 14 years old and still healthy.

It's so weird that a cutting from CG that later died from SB grows healthy isn't it? Nature can be so questionable and yet so facinating.

Monika, I just saw Bolero's picture on the SB pic thread. OH NO! I would have died! What a sad list!

So your friends that never trade, do they just get seeds in to vary their collections or do they just do their own hybridizations and admire from afar others' beauteous creations?

What horrid day on 1995 when this happened. Did you ever find out how it got to Germany?

Kell, take a closer look at the picture of Bolero I. You will notice, the strong suaveolens - influence. Even though, it is a double, the mix of funnel - trumpet shape is easely recoignized. Bolero II is out of the same cross but the aurea influence cannot be overlooked. Bolero II is not prone to it.
I never found out, how it came to Germany. All I know is, how it founds its way into my collection.
