Bernese Mountain Dog

We had a Bernese Mountain dog a few years back. He died of old age and was the best dog that we ever had. DH would like to get another one so we have been looking in shelters and humane societies. So far, we have struck out. The dog we had came from a shelter but when I e-mailed them, they said they haven't had any of those breed come through for a long time. Is this a rare breed?? I never heard of it before we got this dog and he was a cross.
DH found a 7-9 month old dog in Indiana (we live in South Dakota) so he called them to see if they would air freight him. Well, we are always a day late and a dollar short. He had been adopted the day before. DH is bummed, but still looking. I think he would drive 500 miles for one. Does anyone know of any at a shelter?? (Preferably within a days driving) LOL
DH found some on the internet, but the prices are way out of our range. Besides, I really would like to rescue one from a shelter.
I don't know if I should be asking this here, but it seems like there aren't any out there in shelters. If we were more patient, spring is coming and I'm sure there would be puppies available. ;)
