Help needed on new computer

I recently purchased a new computer and it came with windows ME installed on it. I have managed to get all my software installed but when I try to use my scanner or my digital camera it tells me " Comunication is Error" I have read all the helps on the computer (there are soooo many!)
But still cannot figure out what I need to do to fix it.

Everything worked great on the old system with windows 98. I thought about just going and installing 98 on this new one but The disk it is on is computer specific and will not work on the new system.

I need to get this taken care of so the old computer can go to live at my grandkids house but can't give it up before I can get this one working for me.

Any help for me out there?
