Is there anything I can do or use
to get grass to grow in nothing but
shaded area. The soil will grow flowers,
but no grass. Have tried the expensive
shade grass, nope! Besides getting
truck load of top soil is there any
suggestions?
thanks

no front lawn
Give up the grass and plant hosta!!!!!!!!!!LOL
lilyfan - Hosta is an excellent choice, especially if it doesn't die back in the winter in deller's zone. At my old house in the city, we deliberately took up the lawn and planted flowers and ajuga. We had a huge maple tree right in the middle of the yard. I planted flowers in a circle about 6 feet out around the tree. The rest of the front yard I planted in ajuga. It stays green even in zone 5.
Our backyard had no grass either. It was entirely patio and garden. It was fenced in a very private. I loved that yard.
We even took up the grass on the tree lawn and planted flowers that the neighborhood children could pick when they took walks.
I like your thinking.
Tell me what is ajuga?
For my zone (7) what types of
hosta? Me my back and purse
thank you, no more fighting
the dirt...UNCLE I GIVE UP.
DELLER
Another name for ajuga is bugleweed. Ajuga is a ground cover. You can look it up on the PlantDataBase. There are some great photos. You are right about your back and pocketbook. Once you get a ground cover established, it is usually pretty care free - even pretty when it blooms. Ajuga blooms bright blue spires in the spring, by the way.
As for hosta - I would suggest going to the hosta forum. They are the experts ! I had hosta at my old house (here too, for that matter) but I don't know the name of it.
See what being a 'smart alec' caused!
lillyfan,
if the hosta plan works,
then I will be a
smart deller lol
Ran across a site for
Zoysia grass. ordered 100 plugs.
very cheap.. will use a fill in.
If it doesn't work, I haven't
lost much money.
Remember hostas are the favourite food of slugs... You would need to be sure that you can control the slimeys or you would have a garden of pathetic-looking doyleys...
