I have grown many elephant ears in the past, but never any from a bulb and I know this will probably sound stupid. I have never grown the 'normal' green ee and found some bulbs that I thought I would try this year. Which end goes up???? (The bulbs or tubers are round, about the size of a softball) Sorry, and please don't laugh!!! LOLOL
Brinda :)
EE question!???
Brinda,is it Colocasia?common EE?the bulb should be very round,do you see a place that is bare, where it looks like it was cut or broken from the mother plant?are there any growth nodes on it?
Hey Doc....I would only assume that it is the common ee by the pic. The only label was Elephant Ear. It is round and softball size....a few were kind of oblong and it does have a bare place that appears to have been cut from the mother plant. I didn't see any growth nodes on it. I just saw them at WW yesterday.
More then likely, the cut end is up,you can lay on side if you need to,they will sprout.
Brinda,
There should also be small pits or holes on the bottom of the bulb. These are from the feeding roots.
Be advised they will not start to grow until the temp is in the low 70's.
They will often throw a shoot or even a small leaf and then just sit there until they hit the sun and warmth.
Then jump back.
Here's a shot from the shady area in our front yard.
They got maybe 3 hours of late afternoon sun a day.
The bulb was about golf ball size.
