bauhinia tomentosa (st. thomas)

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I started some from seeds. Anyone grow this? Any suggestions? Full sun? How much water?

rylaff,

Do you have a Southern Living
Gardening Book? This plant is listed under Bauhinia, does not have the second name you listed.

Bauthinia Orchid tree Fabaceae (Leguminosae)

Reads. These flamboyant flowering plants have a very special place in central & southern Fl.. Common to all gardens bauhinias are twin "leave", actually twin lobes. Not fussy about soil as long as it is reasonably well drained.
Tolerates light shade, regular to moderate water.

Is this the right plant??

Here is a good site I use.
Hope it helps.

I have a big tree in the yard of bauhinia variegata, it's a large tree. It reseeds everywhere.
I just bought a bauhinia blakeana, it does not make seeds and must be grown from cuttings. It blooms before the leaves come out and has been blooming here since January. It's fragrant too. Here is a picture of it's bloom(which looks a bit smashed from the ride home in the car)

As I understand, Bauhinia tomentosa (ST. Thomas tree) has a flower that starts out as off white and then turns yellow. Here is a picture of the flower I found on the web. The seeds sprouted quite easily. I think it may be somewhat tropical. Not positive on that.

it is not hardy to cold is what I have read, grows in zone 10-11! It needs full sun and sandy, humusy, well-drained soil.
