My first ever brug

County Roscommon, Ireland(Zone 8a)

Since joining Dave's, this forum has got me interested in brugs. So I had to share my delight with you of my first ever brug - a seedling of Sanguinea which is 3" tall. I keep it on a window sill and turn it once/twice a day. Will the stem stay straight that way? I'm so chuffed.

Looking good Sue. I hope it will stay straight for you. I've had good luck and bad luck, but most of the bad luck was my own fault for not turning my plants often enough.

Congratulations! I know the feeling -- I have some that look just like it and its my first attempt too. Do you have yours under lights?

Oh Yes!It is that time of year,I hope you have good luck with it,Such a Baby,Too cute!

No lights, just a large window. I would like to get some lights (florescent is OK?) but my other half is already studying the electric bill due to my heated propagator being on 24/7, so I'm not sure I can push it to having lights on 24/7 LOL. I hope to have a greenhouse up and running very soon which will allow my brug more even light. What sort of temperature can this brug stand?

Thank you all for your encouragement.

awww Sue! It looks great!
I dont use a grow mat, only florescent lights with my grow stand. The lights keep everything (including that room) nice and warm! :o) Plus you wont need them on 24/7. Maybe you could do some sweet talkin and tell the other 1/2 that you would be VERY willing to give up the grow mat, (that you DO use 24/7) for a florescent grow stand (that you wont use near as often)?? Make sense? lol
Here are some plans... (just in case) ((wishful thinking))

Sue: I don't use mats either, and I only leave the lights on while I'm awake -- the plants are not on the sleeping level of the house and I'm so afraid of fire. Anyway, they are doing great. Like Shelly mentioned, the fluorescent lights give off just enough heat anyway...

Just to clarify - I germinated the brug in plastic bag. The propagator is full of other stuff. (Not to mention the dining room table, around the boiler, window sills LOL).
Shelly, thanks for the links. One more thing - the soil is very moist in the pot. Will this harm it or should I repot it into dryer soil?

Hi Prudence. Last year I germinated my seeds in wet paper towels in plastic bags taped to my computer screen sides and back. Then I put in 4 in pots and put them on my window sills. They grew great. If you feel they need support to stay straight attach to a chop stick.

And in your zone you will be able to move them outside pretty soon I would think. I have already started moving mine out.

Who are the parents of your little baby? She is so cute!

Congratulations on your success with germinating this seedling! Please keep us posted as it begins to grow, "Y" out, and can't wait to see the flowers on this "baby"! Good Work!! Keep it up!!! :~)

looks great, but whats hubby gunna say when you come home with the HUGE pots to put that cute little baby in and then in the fall tell him he has to drag them all in the house?LOL

Kell, I bought the seeds from a seed company. They are called Brug Sanguinea (I think it's the hardiest and has red flowers). As for the large pots, I've already bought three 20 gallon pots hidden in the shed hehehe. I'm sure he won't mind dragging the plant inside in the winter - a small price to pay for such beauty.

How wet should the soil be(?) - mine is very wet!

Thanks everyone. You are all such an inspiration to me.

prudence, B. sanguineas dont like high temperatures very well. The soil should not be too wet.It is still a seedling and it will take some time, to build a strong rootball.

Thanks Monika, I think I will repot it into some dryer soil.
