Space Saving Idea for Seed Starting

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I had a hard time deciding where to post this, and figured that this was the best forum to do so. I have resisted building the PVC grow stand due to a lack of space. I built the floor model stand (modified table-top), but quickly outgrew it. This is what I came up with today. I have a little TV room that is never used by anyone but me (to study), and the lights and trays fit so nicely underneath the table, you hardly notice that its there :)

LOL! LOL!

That would last about 2 minutes in my house!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Looks good to me, if you don't have any pets.

Oh, I have three dogs -- a 125 lb Golden Retriever; an Australian Silky Terrier and a Blue Heeler! They just looked at the mess and moved on... Besides, its in a room that isn't used much -- just a little den.

It is amazing what we can come up with when we need to plant and play in the dirt. Not a bad idea at all Gretchen. Better than what I have right in front of my TV.

Shirley -- its just whatever works, right? I just thought if it worked for me, maybe for someone else too. :)

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

My husband would have me committed if I did that! LOL

I think it's a great idea. Thanks for the picture.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Looks like a good idea to me. I've had mine all around the registers, windows ... until I got tired of it and went and built myself a plant stand for downstairs. Thanks ... you did good!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I like it, now I have one more idea to try as soon as my second grow light stand is full, in the next couple days .My niece is susposed to get this table but I can now use it . LOL Thanks Carolyn

Thank you! I'm personally loving having it "out of my way". A nice evening to you all!!! Gretchen

Very clevar.

I think it is very ingenius. You must have been watching Small Spaces on HGTV! They have great ideas when there is limited space. Maybe you could have your own version Small spaces Ideas for gardeners.
Looks like a plan for me. I have a birdroom which is off limits to my furry friends and I keep a lot of my stuff in there.

Boy, Gretchen, if you get all the seeds to grow to maturity that you have planted, you are going to be living in the Garden Eden in a few months.

Windy -- no, I don't watch TV...can't ever get any time that DH isn't glued to some 'manly man' show, LOL! But, thanks!

Well, Sylvia...my fingers are crossed!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Gretchen, my DH also loves those shows. If he ever gets off the couch I just know I will soon live in a palace!

Adrian, MI(Zone 5b)

Looks good to me! Mothers can always find a nesting spot for their BABIES!! Good luck with yours!!

Hum, I thought more might have done this. I drilled holes in the underside of my dining table a couple of years ago when I first started growing from seed inside. Hubby and I added my 2 extenders to the table and broke out the drill to accomidate for my lights. I kept thinking what am I doing to my poor table.
I could fit four 4ft shoplights under it. When my girlfriends would visit and see it for the first time, it looked foolish when they were basicly crawling on my floor to see what I had been growing.
Hubby and I built a couple of light stands last winter and placed them in the basement but I still have the hooks screwed in the underside of my table if I ever run out of room and need to hang them back up under it.
It looks great to me Kauffman. Not many of us I suppose want to damage furniture for the love of our plants (LOL).

Personally, I don't care for this piece of furniture -- its a holdover from DH's bachelor pad, pre-wedding. Too big and heavy for my taste. Compromise was to put it in my den. Turned out to be the perfect size for the 48" shop lights though, and the holes were already there! All I had to do was feed the little chain (included with the lights) through the hole, and voila! So while I sit and study for my Master Gardener class, I can keep an eye on my babies...hehehe. Dott -- Great minds think alike!

Kell-- Guess I shouldn't complain. I almost lost him last year to acute leukemia. We just celebrated his one year bone marrow transplant anniversary on January 23rd. All things considered, he's doing great, but has a ways to go to be back to 100%, plus we've been told not to start celebrating until this time next year.........

Hope you all have a blessed afternoon!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, that sure puts things into perspective! I wish him the best! I bet that makes your hugs all the more tighter! Wishing for next year to come quickly so we all can celebrate for you!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I wish you both the best!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thank you both so much -- that means more to me than you can imagine!!!

hugs,

Gretchen

Gretchen ... also wishing you both the best. It has to make everyday special.

My babies seem to like it under here... All seeds were planted on 1/27 and 1/28.

Around the Holidays I read one of our members posts about using the kitchen table and how her relative (s) would need to eat somewhere else in the house =)
Cuttings underneath along with shop lights and I believe the rest of the kitchen was full of over-wintering brugs in pots...just wish I could remember who it was =(

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Nice group of babies.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I love it! Nice to see others as crazy as me about trying to start seeds with no place to do it.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thanks you guys!!! Scoot -- I missed that one, but I'd love to read it... :)

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

That's what I like about this site. Sometimes I feel like I'm a bit "over the edge," but then I read what some of y'all do and I feel "normal."

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Know what you mean!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I just hope no one comes to visit before I can get them in the ground -- that room is quickly becoming a zoo! Thank goodness its upstairs and out of the way LOL!
