Passion Vine ?

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

My neighbor rolled up about 200' of a red flower Passion vine off of the board fence that divides our property, said the weight was tearing up the fence. I went out to the shop/carport area yesterday and found that the huge main plant was in my corner and had started growing back. It is coming all inside the carport, and has grown completely around my son's motocycle and is covered with blooms. I followed a piece that had grown into the ground, tried to dig down to find a root to pot, just wouldn't come up so I jerked on it and two BIG bulbs came up. My question (finally) is: is this the Passion flower vine or did I get into something else? There is a lot of "viney" stuff growing back there. I really need to tame this because it is starting to grow into the shop. HELP!!

Gosh, I wish I had that problem.. (spray some of that Roundup stuff on the leaves and they say that will kill the root also, as it is absorbed through the leaves, it may take a few days to dry up) ..

or, you can cut it into pieces and mail them to me..lol..

or, I can send the darn roof rats here that eat them all up to take care of them for you.

or, or, or.. good luck.. Antoinette

edited to say: I have been trying to get these vines going and everything that can happen to them, has.. so I am starting over with seeds and a couple of sticks the roof rats left behind (trying to root those)..

Patti,

I am with Gourd, before you kill
it root some & trade. I would also love some.

P.S.
I use the lawn on my vine when
they go crazy!!

Patti, mine just died. I'd love to have a rooted cutting for trade.

Can you save the seeds and trade them too. I love some seeds of it.

Now I REALLY feel dumb! I have never had a Passion vine before, this one was here when we bought the house last May. My daughter has a purple one, that's how I knew what the red one was, the flowers looked the same. After the neighbor took this one off the fence he brought me a tiny purple one in a pot. It is now growing up my palm tree at the rate of about 3inches a day. These vines are almost scary they grow so fast. If I knew how to root it I would send you ALL as much as you wanted. I would never kill a plant, so I guess I'll just have to take a whip and chair out to the carport and try to keep it in shape (grin). My original question was: do they grow from bulbs, or have I dug up something and put in a pot that will give me an unpleasant surprise if it grows?

I don't think the bulb is from the passion vine... I've never seen one have a bulb. But then again... I grow them in pots.

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

To my knowledge Passifloras don't grow from bulbs...this red passion vine is like Kudzu in Florida...it will eat your house once it gets started! A friend down the street planted one going against everyone's advice and it got so large it collapsed her fence! You can root some cuttings in water or soil and keep it under control in a pot on a trellis.

Oh patischell, you can use Roundup on that tuber too, before you pull it out that way all the roundup goes to each root of the tuber and you don't leave anything in the ground.. darn..

I think my passion vine purple one (the one I just purchased and the roof rats ate) may be rooting, I put it into a clear cup in soiless mix then put the cup in a clear veggies bag from the grocery store, blew air into it, tied the top with a bread tie, then set the thing in front of a sunny window. There are leaves coming out of the stems now, I don't know if there are any roots yet, can't see them yet. This was a couple of weeks ago.. I do open up the bag everyday to get some air in there (and to be nosey) so they don't mold. I hope someday I will see the darn thing bloom...

DALE, when I saw KUDZU I almost fainted! I'm from western North Carolina originally and I have seen it eat mountains! There is Coral vine growing in the mix too, maybe the bulb is that.

GOURD, I really hope your vine grows. Sounds like you are having a lot of fun with it. I think I must be nosey too, I put that bulb in a pot and now I am just curious as to what will grow out of it!

Are all red passion vines this hardy? I wanted to try a red one.

Riverside, CA(Zone 9b)

Gourd, I live in Riverside, and I have a large red passion flower (P. vitifolia). It blooms all winter, and is in full bloom right now. You are more than welcome to come here and take cuttings. I find that with a little bottom heat, they root pretty quickly for me.

I am going to get this one. It's from Monterey Bay Nursery. It is called'Allspice' a hybrid of Incense.I am dying to grow it on my fence. I was going to grow a violet trumpet, but I lost interest. The Passion vines look so spectaculer I just had to have one. This one!

Hi Vickey, that sounds great.. I appreciate that. I have some incense that I am trying to root, it looks like it has some leaves coming up too. This is a first time experience in rooting for me, let's see how that goes. Started some seeds too and a couple came up, the sure germinate slow, or percentage wise, it seems like only 3 out of 30 seeds sprouted.

That Alllspice up there is nice too.

They say that passion vines have virus's and this one doesn't, any thoughts? I am new to them and would appreaceate any feedback. Thanks.

Hey, Vickey [Hesperu], I'd LOVE to have a bunch of your passiflora cuttings to root. To my collection of brugs and daturas I'm "branching" out to add exotic vines. My daughter is a Junior at UCR and she will be coming home next weekend to celebrate her birthday, which will be Feb 28. Maybe she can have a friend drive her to you house to pick up some cuttings?

Thanks!

Hey! Gourd tell me how your rooting works out. I just buy stuff, but I like the idea of cloning the good plant knowing what I would get. Price-wise it's ideal too. Thanks, I will be having the Allspice to take cuttings from in the future. Has anybody heard of Carla's virus in passiflora's?

I wish I had read this earlier...I just ripped out mounds of red passion vine! And I know it will be back in no time!

Hi Monterey, there is a couple of posts here all dedicated to rooting passion vines by Tropicman and it is called TEST. There is where I got tons of info for rooting these. I used soiless mix, in a clear plastic cup and wet the soil before I put anything in it), then just stuck the cuttings in there and stuck the whole thing in a clear plastic bag, any plastic bag should work. Then sprayed water on the cuttings and the sides of the plastic bag, then blew air into the bag to make it puffy and lt looks like a mini greenhouse and used a bread tie to tie the top of the bag. I do open it up like every other day and leave open for a few hours to prevent mold. I set the cut infront of a sunny window and now have it on heat mats. Although, I did dig up in there to look, there are a couple of roots forming but I am not going to take it out until it has a good couple of months in that cup (I have bad luck), I will start to fertilize it a little, it does have lots of leaves and lt seems like the vining will start soon. I put them in sometime in mid/late January of this year. They are doing well. I am very happy with this.

Be sure to look for the posts by Tropicman here because they are rooting many different ways, and hard to root varieties.
