Msconfig is that handy little utility which, among other things, lets you see what loads at startup. To access it, you click START > RUN and type msconfig, then hit enter. The startup tab will show you what all runs at startup. You can check and uncheck items there.
Windows 2000 does not come with msconfig. Don't despair, though! Startup Control Panel 2.8 is available for free at http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7976,00.asp
Cleaning up what programs run at startup can increase your system's performance. If you're unsure of a program's role, check the excellent information available at sites such as sysinfo.org: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
