Is Bee Balm / Mondara easy to grow from seed?

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

I have never noticed Bee Balm reseeding .... seems like it spreads from the roots.

I am wondering if it is an easy plant to grow from seed. I don't have a greenhouse, but do have a rack with lights.

How does it produce the first year .... does it take a couple of years for it to bloom?

It takes a while to germinate but grows quickly and blooms the first year for me.I sprinkle seed on a roughened soil surface and water in.

Thanks gone2seed,

If I were to start it inside, would I want only 1 seed per "pot"? It sounds like you just sow yours directly where you want them to grow. I'm not sure that would work in my zone 5.

Mondara is available in greenhouses in my area, but I have seen some varieties in catalogs/websites that I've never seen locally. I thought maybe I could grow one of those from seed.

I put several in each pot and thin later.I do start in pots.I have never had any luck starting them in the garden. Our soil is sand and drys out too quickly.

Thanks again Gone2Seed, I think I'm going to give it a try.
