Alocasia Sedenii

Stoneham, MA(Zone 6a)

Yesterday on the 'half-dead' plant table of my local nursery I found a Alocasia Sedenii - loved the silver veins and purple-burgundy backside. Half the leaves were dead but five are fine, it has new growth and the root ball is white and healthy. I've never had one of these before so could any one tell me when should repot it, what soil and is it poisonous to my cat who eat anything that's green?

here is a link that be of some help: http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.html Alocasia is one of the plants that are harmful to kitties.

About repotting: I wish I could be more help for you, but we leave ours in the ground year round here so I am not sure about repotting, but I would think that if you are keeping it inside, almost anytime would be good to repot. It might look like it is dying, but could be that it is gone dormant or even plant shock..lol. I am assuming that since it was looking poorly, it might have been grown in a greenhouse and then perhaps taken out. Don't toss it! Even if it looks like it has died completely.

Lisa, thank you for that link, I spent much too much time there looking at the pretty kitties! Anyone with cats and houseplants should keep a list of toxic plants. Tropicals are dramatic and unique plants but, I guess, many of them are poisonous :(. At least I can keep my Gardenia, Hybiscus, Hoya and African Violet plants in Tazmin's 'grazing' range! :)
