winter HARDEY hibiscus rare seeds
you have mail and welcome to daves!
To my knowledge, there are no truly hardy yellow or tricolor hibiscus. If there is something new like that, please tell us more!
Hibiscus trionium (Flower of an hour) is yellow with a purple throat. Of course it only grows about 6 inches tall, but it is a charming member of the hibiscus family. You could grow it around the bottom of your larger ones.
i have been talking to several hybridzers of tropical hibiscus they have 800 different colors & they grow these in florida,i ask them about crossing the hardy with the tropical & they said it might work.i grow roses & have about 200 i hybridize the roses & also graft & grow them from cutting.i might have to use a hardy root stock because it can take the cold & then graft in the colors from tropical hibiscus.Joe Ludick has produced more colors than anyone. they are going to send me purple- blue- green & brown.if this works i will let you know.
The tropicals and hardy hibiscus have been crossed many times, and never yet produced a viable seed. While it "might work", it is highly improbable, and would represent a major breakthrough. The hardy rootstock wold survive, but the grafted buds would die at low temperatures. Many top hybridizers have tried crossing H. rosa-sinensis and hardy H. moscheutoe (and others) to get the tropical colors into the hardy plants, but it remains an elusive goal. Best wishes for success, hope it works!
