Bulbs and Baileys

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

It all started with my refridgerator filled with 7 pots of bulbs. Thank goodness I live alone and don't need a whole refridgerator for food! Below is a picture of the top shelf. Two of my favorite things: Flowers in the middle of winter and Baileys for the middle of winter!

Red Hyacinth was taken out on 1/18/04 and Purple Prince tulips 1/28/04. This is both on 1/28/04.

I'm thinking I should have a refrigerator JUST for bulbs and seeds. If it HAD TO HOLD BAILEY'S, too... well, not enough room, LOL.

Darius--This fridge came with house and is "coppertone" color. So you know it is from the 70's. When I can afford it, I will get a new fridge for the kitchen and put this in the basement for bulbs, etc.

I know this has been asked before but whats an average length of time to keep em in the fridge. Im thinking about doing this with a couple of bulbs that I bought too late to plant because the ground was frozen already and Id like to see some kinda bloom this year if possible. Id put them on the deck but the dogs would just rick them apart.

The Baileys didnt make it any where near this post but I do have some Bacardi O, does that count?

Limey have you tried Baileys in white coffee? ummmmm

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

Mark, tried baileys in coffee, white coffee, on rocks, straight. You name it, I like it!

Dravencat, you keep the Bacardi, rum turns me into my evil twin (and I do have a twin sister, she objects to that saying)!

According to this website: http://www.bulb.com/spring/chilling.asp

The following weeks are needed: Hyacinth 12, muscari 16, tulip 15, and narcissus 16. I only did these so don't know for other bulbs. Be aware, I read that taller varieties (of tulips for example) don't do well being forced. I think that it was because they flop over to easy in pots.

Ack! I just threw out a fridge that still worked, because we got new appliances. We did consider keeping it and putting a tap in in it. LOL Forcing bulbs never even occured to me.

Thought you folks might want to see the finished results of these two pots of flowers. This picture was taken on 2/13/04. I have several pots left to bloom; it sure is nice to see these mid winter. I have been taking these pots to my mom's house for her to enjoy. She has altzheimer's and although she really has no idea who I am, she still loves the flowers I bring.

Limey those are beautiful! What a great thing to do with them.
It is wonderful that you can share such a simple pleasure with her. You are probably making a much deeper connection with her than you could through any other method.
My heart goes out to you, it has to be very difficult to have someone who was such a large part of your life not recognize you.

Limey - you're a wonderful person. I often take fresh daisy mums to my mom during the colder months. I'm very lucky to have a loving mom what's healthy. We never know what will happen to us.

Thanks for sharing your photos.

Very nice. I will try some of those next year, it sounds easy. I'm glad you are sharing the flowers with your mom while she can still enjoy them. It is a sad disease, sadder for the family than for the person who has it. Flowers seem to touch people we can't reach in other ways.

I would encourage anyone to force bulbs in the winter. It is very easy and brings much joy in the winter. Next year I plan to start earlier so that I can have my first pots blooming at Christmas. I will also stagger pots every two weeks because they all seemed to bunch together when I only did one week apart.

For all of you who like Bailey's try this. Talea. It's something new. I myself like Baileys but found this a few days ago and it's an amaretto cream liqeur.
Drink it chilled right from the bottle it tastes somewhat like a werthers original candy or mix it with hot coffee.

Try it and let me know how you like!!
