Water Hyacinth
Eichhornia crassipes

My plant got a rather long flower spike. It came from nothing and became a full inflorescence in 3 days!. Rio de Janeiro, early summer.

That is really lovely, Mono!

Thanks :^) Unfortunately, it seems it will be the last flowers of this plant for me. The water is gradually being cleaned up by the plant, and the nutrients are being quickly exhausted. I donīt have any "dirty" water in hand, and I fill its pot with clean water.

I am not sure if I wanna keep it alive. I have a lovely Utricularia growing on the same water, and if the Water Hyacint gets to dominate the pot, the Utricularia might face some serious threat.

Can you just keep a small piece going and mail me the rest? LOL, just kidding. I never thought about it needing nutrient rich water. Would they do well with some fish?
Thanks, Susan
P.S. One day I went to your member page and then followed the links to your favorite web pages...I read a little bit and then realized it was your personal diary. Sorry! I did not read much, but you wrote something about your girlfriend having surgery. I hope things are going well for her and you.

Thank you, everything is right :^) Not a problem at all, I like to make some things public, things that I think they are important and that people can take something for themselves, for their life. You are welcome :^)

As for the Water Hyacint... It could go well along with fishes. But... the plant reproduces itself very fast, and it can cover ponds in no times. The roots absorb oxygen from water. Plus, as it covers the water, green and blue algae that provide O2 wonīt grow anymore. Itīs a difficult task, because the plant is hard to control.

Thanks for the additonal information. No wonder it is on the invasive list. I guess it could even kill fish in a closed environment if it uses up all the oxygen.
Glad to hear that things are going well for you otherwise.
Susan
