Non-allergic metal

What is the type of metal used in jewelry making that is usually non-allergic? What I am thinking of is not expensive. The Portland, Oregon paper, The Oregonian, did a feature some time back on a guy making jewelry with this metal which is just coming into popularity. I can not wear wedding band or ear rings for more then an hour before I break out. All started as a result of having my dorm mates pierce my ears in 1967.
