Hi, MaVieRose! I was wondering the same... must be an indoor thing.

Carol,

Tamarind grows very tall. in the Philippines, they are taller and wider than most house.

keep them indoors, u get so much bug problems. i am really curious.

Me, too, MaVie... maybe Mitjo lives in a 'high rise'! LOL!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Happy Birthday Carol! hope u have a great day.

wonder if it is too cold for the bugs LOL! wonder if Mitjo has any bug problems on any of the tropical plants he grows?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Alaska is relatively bug free when it comes to plants. They seem to winter kill here. You'd think Finland would be the same. We get some aphids, some thrips, a few cut worms, a smattering of root maggots... oh, and slugs, but they aren't bugs, are they! I've seen whiteflies in greenhouses (not mine, thank goodness) and on house plants, but not outdoors. I guess everybody likes to enjoy the weather in the tropics, including bugs!

Carol,

the past 3 yrs., i have always added 1 tbsp of hydrogen peroxide, 1 tsp Palmolive soap, 1 tsp murphy's oil to each gal. of water at least once a week. i do this year around.

the past few yrs., i have had infestations of all kinds of bugs, including spider mites, aphids, gnats and what have u, both indoor and outdoor. no snail in the desert... snails do not have any chance on the harsh desert sand. this year, i do not have any bugs at all!!!

You are a brave soul, MaVie. I know plants can tolerate these things, but I always hesitate! I do use Ivory dish soup and water for aphids, but when possible, I just put them outside in the wind and chill! I need to ask you again about sterile starter mix, while I am thinking of it. Email me, when you have time.
