"Icehouse" January 2004

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

This is the part of the glasshouse.
January has been COLD .. 0-teens temps all this month.
All is encased in ice right now. Hard to believe. lol
Inside the brugs are blooming away. HA

Wish I could be there. Bet it feels good inside. You must have some great insulation in your glass to have ice staying on the outside. Sure looks cold.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Is it all glass?
Is thats straw or hay around the bottom for insulation?

does it work?

I have to keep shoveling the snow away from the bottom edge of mine cause its too dark towards the floor for my short stuff

Mesilla Park, NM

Oh my goodness, I wondered how you overwintered such a wonderful selection of plants. That is a gorgeous greenhouse (that is what it is, right?). Wow.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Ohhh brrrrr! Im glad its staying cozy inside!! :o)

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Karyn,
Yes, all glass. Around the bottom is hay from our fields to help with insulation.
Black bags is dried leaves they stacked there, too, through winter.
The footer cuts down on some of the south light exposure to the length of glasshouse.
But sun east and west esposure other times of the day make up for.

Spring .. both hay and leaves will go right where the sit into the canna beds that run the length of the glasshouse and beyond.

I've amended these beds with TONS of leaves, grass, hay ,manure, etc. the last years.
You wonder where it all goes? Guess it takes alot of organic matter for a little great humus. LOL
But the soil is coming very good (o:

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What a huge and glorious place! And to think it is filled with brugs and other godies! Too much for me!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

See how good you can make it, even in the worst of conditions. COLD/ICE!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

What an incredibly beautiful greenhouse! Lots of room for growing all your Brugs, Cannas, and other favorites too! ENJOY!!!

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Abutilon...what are the dimensions of your glasshouse? Looks to be pretty big. Isn't it wonderful to be able to open the door and go in and see all these blooming and green things? That's how I feel when I go in mine.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Alice, I know I have said it before but I will say it again . . I Love your glasshouse. I can't even begin to imagine what one would cost now. I even like the snow and I know that you probably don't. I can say that because it is probably every 15 years that we get several inches.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

That's a beautiful greenhouse Alice. Glad it's nice and warm inside for your plants, cause the outside sure looks cold!

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

That house is just beautiful, so glad you found it and were able to restore it to its full beauty! Would have been a shame for it to just sit and go down hill.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Anna, the glasshouse is 25' x 80'.
Hoping to get enough $ together this year for a separate greenhouse for the cannas.
Leaving the glasshouse for brugs only. Brugs really like the glasshouse (o:

Tracey, original glasshouse was 120' with a conservatory.
Not enough salvagable to put up the whole original length.
Hopefully will be able to restore the conservatory.
I would like attached to the house (o:

Your Glasshouse is beautiful Alice!!! I love it! If I would have such a house, I would move into it during the winter to enjoy the plants LOL and forget about winter!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Alice, your glassshouse is just wonderful. Do you have a dead air space also. Bet your cannas are beautiful. Donna

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Alice, you just made me jealous!! No really it's great,i'm kind of glad I don't have one because i'd probably loose my job over it. I'd never want to go back to work if I had one that size with brugs blooming in it year round.

I am thnking heavily of building another gh though ,maybe 18w x 12h x 40l just to overwinter the brugs and keep my smaller gh for overwintering the other plants.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I love it. I'm seriously thinking about another, larger one myself. Where my little one is now is really in the wrong place (it doesn't get enough sun). My yard is small, but there is a storage house now that I noticed gets full winter sun (with the leaves gone) and I would love to have a gh there. The glass ones are just unbelievable and what I would really love to have. I was wondering about the "dead air space" too.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

It's so pretty! I'd love to spend a winter day in there.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Oh Alice that would be so cool to walk out the door into the conservatory full of blooming brugs.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

WOW - now thats a nice "house"!...
