What's the plant you really dislike?

Point Pleasant Beach, NJ(Zone 7a)

Well mine is my Schefflera. However after seeing one in the beuty salon friday, I have to say I may just change my mind if mine turns out like that. So he's starting to grow on me. But I also am very much disliking the bridal veil as well. It just looks like a huge mess. No matter what you do you have dead leaves under the thousands that are piled on top. Mine isn't looking all that graceful just things going this way and that and driving me absolutely nuts, because it just looks yucky. So for right now I have it hiding in a well lit spot behind my couch so no one can really see it...lol
So what's the one you dislike, can't stand to look at because the urge to chop the heck out of it is soooooooo strong?

Hey Holly!

My "weakest link" seems to be humidity lovers. Th eonly humidity loving plant I still grow is my large alocasia--somehow this guy has made it and has bloomed three times this year!

When I first got into plants I tried to change my environment (humidifers, misting devices, etc) to meet the needs of plants (e.g., fittonias, calathea, ferns, alocasia, some delicate palms). I soon came to the relaization that *for me* it is best to grow plants that work in your environment. I was lucky enough to be introduced to the amazing world of sansevierias. Now, I can enjoy my plants without worrying--they love typical home environments! Others that work well for me: aspidistra, beaucarnea, zamioculcas, rhapis excelsa.

But to the fittonias out there-->"YOU ARE THE WEAKEST LINK, GOODBYE." :)

Ack! Jewel I totally forgot about the Zebra, who sits very unhappily on my dining room table. His trunk is rotting and I don't think that there is a darned thing I can do to save him. I can tell ya this, I definately won't get another one of those suckers! Fungus gnats also thrive on his moist soil!

Lessee. What plant don't I have and do I avoid buying? I am still thinking...

I'm sure I'll come up with something.

Oh yes, HEDERA!!!! Took me so long to think of it because of that terrible hedge of it that used to be a fence between my yard & the neighbors' yard. Gets ugly fast. Spidermites spontaneously generate on it. It's overrated and everyone tries to grow it. When new gardeners fail with it they don't try indoor plants again. I could go on and on and on. And it's used too darn much outdoors here and is so invasive you can hack on it daily without making a difference.
Yuk. Ivy.
And the flowers really really stink.
one good thing about it: Honeybees swarm to it, and heaven knows we're losing our bee populations.

Most of the time, I don't hate plants EVEN IF they've been troublesome to grow. I doubt I could grow a Zebra plant so I've never even tried, but I still like them when I see them in bloom. Same goes for Gardenias.

Ivy has never appealed to me very much. I always think of it as a none-too-attractive outdoor plant, not a houseplant. The reports that it can kill trees if it grows on them outdoors and that it's quite fussy when kept indoors certainly don't add any appeal to it.

I also don't like those grafted "Moon cactus" plants, because, aesthetics aside (who am I to judge a neon cactus
as garish, when I'd probably love a neon-colored orchid flower?), apparently the rootstock the "moon" is grafted on is short-lived...so even if you have the conditions to grow it, it will die on you eventually anyway unless you perform "surgery" to graft it to something else. I really prefer sturdy, long-lived plants. The kind that my grandkids could inherit someday.

No offense intended to those who love the plants I don't like, of course. These are just my personal tastes. If you get joy from these plants, more power to you.

crotons,codiateums i hate!!!!!

Dear PinkPhal,

I second your opinion - I find the 'moon cactus' quite odious, and would have them banned. There is absolutely nothing appealing about them - but there's no accounting for taste, including my own, I am sure. I made the mistake of voicing this opinion once on the 'other' (where many of us are/were) forum, suggesting that the person get a real cactus (it was meant as a tongue-in-cheek remark). I then heard so much howling you'd think I was out in the high desert, cooking ribs for the coyotes. Some folks like them, but they are an affront to my cactus aesthetics, to the cactus hobby, human civilization.....I'll stop here.

Tossing it in the rubbish bin,
Moon cactus, moon cactus,
Puts on my face a big ol' grin,
Moon cactus, moon cactus

(Sung to the tune of Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow")

Thanks for the laughs Jeff! :)

Hey Sansman!!

Isn't Jeff funny w/ these improvised lyrics? He has shared a number of them w/ me privately & I keep telling him there's a book in here somewhere. Would you agree? Now, every time he says another one, we simultaneously say 'we should be writing these down'.

I do hope you got my Em acknowledging receipt of your gift S.T. Lillian True. She's happily potted up in C&S mix getting used to her new environment!! Thx again!!

I've established a LOVE/HATE relationship with many plants. I LOVE them, they HATE me I've decided! I love Gardenia's, alocasia's, ficus (yes I'm one of the few that cannot grow these), cacti, succs, flowering plants, and many, MANY more I can't recall right now. Like Brooks, I've gone with plants that do well in my home and drooled longingly at those that I know won't. I'm a Begonia girl myself. And let's not forget the wonderful ZZ!

Chrissy, I agree with you, especially on the Ficus. I have given up, at least for now, trying F.lyrata or F.elastica. (though someone gave me a benjamina that is actually STILL ALIVE after about a year). I figure to focus on the ones I have done well with for now. There's always a new genus or variety of those out there.:)

My most dislike plant.......A Dead One.....LOL
