Need Help finding recipe for a friend - Roll / Bread recipe

A friend of mine asked me to find a recipe for her. This is all I have to go on....

When I was in high school, the cook used to serve us a roll that was mostly all crust, inside was very airy,almost like a puff pastry inside only dry not moist, and almost round in shape.

If this sounds familiar to anyone and you can share the recipe with me it would be greatly appreciated.
