I'm hearing that the storms on the east coast have been bad and many people are without power and that the ice has caused many problems. I hope everyone is okay and that they will check in with us as soon as they can. I was thinking about David's greenhouse and all the brugs he has stored in it. Hope that new gas heater is taking care of them for him and that he and his place are spared from damage along with all the other members out that way.
East Coast Friend Okay???
Im near Annapolis Md. Brugie and so far its been more snow than ice. It snowed some again this evening with rain turning to ice earlier today but around my area its not been too bad. Lots of accidents on the big roads, lots of people still out there driving like the roads were dry and everyone can stop quickly. ggrr.
I hope everyone else is doing ok too.
Thanks, Shirley! I am on the East Coast, southern NJ, and it is very icy and sleety. I just stay home, try not to drive in it. What a mess, but supposed to be over soon, hope so!
I'm in North Carolina and we have snow with ice. The mail carrier hasn't ran her route for three days here. There's been many accidents and they can't get the wreckers (drivers) out to tow the cars away. It's supposed to get warmer tomorrow and hopefully most of it will melt away.
So much for "Neither ice nor sleet nor snow shall stay these curriers from their appointed rounds" LOL but if the mail carrier has enough sense to stay home and be safe I hope the rest of you will do the same.
I don't blame the mail carriers for not going out in this. I think this is the first time I've ever seen the mail not delivered here. It's so slick outside, I can't walk to the greenhouse. I'm sure glad the heater is doing it's job in there. If the heat would go out I guess I'd have to scoot on my butt to get there because if I went out, that's where I'd be (on my butt) LOL
I'm glad you are okay. Hope to hear from more of the easterners today. There have been near 50 deaths because of this storm so far. That is bad.
Just checking in! I'm outside of Baltimore, MD. About 8" of snow on the ground with a thick coating of ice, sleet, freezing rain, which makes everything look shiny & white! Schools closed for the 3rd day now. Traffic has decreased because the kids are at home. Main arteries are passable, but forget the side streets! Some will be diggin' out until Spring! I'm still hibernating (and recuperating from surgery) until then!! :~)
Anyone heard from snowhermit ????
I have. She is posting on BGI and I got a quick note from her this morning. She is just busy buying fertilizer. LOL!!
I heard from Kristi in NJ, she's ok.
They said today that our county(Oswego) has received over 9 feet of snow so far this year.We got over a foot since yesterday and we could have 2-3 feet more by this weekend....I hate snow,I don't belong here......
Its cause I named that brug Lake Effect........I just know it...maybe I should sacrifice it to the Great snow monster.....
You are too funny Karyn!!
Nope.it was a VooDoo curse,I used it so you would send Lake Effect to me!!!!!
I'm doing fine. We had some ice but not near as much as the inland people and parts of N.C.We did not loose any power here but we are about to freez to death!!
We normally don't get cold temps like this until februay. But most of our nights have been in the low to mid 20's since december. Very unusual for us.
Over nine feet of snow? Oh my gosh, that is awful. Where do you put that kind of snow? Glad everyone is checking in and are okay...
Hi Shirley and All ..
The last days have not been alot of fun )o:
It has been snow/freezing rain/snow/freezing rain/etc/ect ...
Roads treacherous. Schools closed. I finally got out today.
I have been in since Sunday
As we are higher elevation (first ridge of Alleghenies) ..
wind, cold, and precipation have caused the glass house to be encased in thick ice.
Brug blooms too close to the glass were frozen to it.
Snow layered with thick ice sections between, on top, and underneath make walking difficult and hazardous.
Holds your weight a second, then crunch sink, crunch sink to the bottom.
Not so good on the ankles.
Lots of accidents, trees down, and lots of falls due to this storm.
Nights the last weeks have been 0 to low teens. Days low teens to low 20s.
We had several foot snowfalls, but the cold has been the real problem.
It has been cold )o: I heard today will stay this way here well into February.
It has been a rough winter here in the east. But we are all ok.
For that I am thankful (o:
Hope everyone else is doing ok, too (o:
I'm glad you are okay. Sorry to hear about the blooms, but it sounds like the plants are okay at least. Hang in there Alice. Hopefully spring will be on the way before long.
We were hit with freezing rain. Of course it collected on the trees and they broke, taking down the power lines. I lost my internet on Monday about noon, my electricity Tuesday about noon and neither are back up. Of course when it first happened, I brought as many plants from the gh to inside, then went to my daughters (where I still am at night). This is my first day back at work. I went by my house on the way in this morning and the temp in the gh was 30, in the house was 41. Low last night was 20. So, my plants are freezing and the food in my freezer is thawing. Maybe I should carry my food outside. They say it may be mid-week end before everything is back in operation.
Oh Linda, that is horrible. Do you have any kind of gas heat that you could put in the greenhouse? Keep us up to date on your situation. I'm just sick thinking about all you are dealing with right now.
I feel so sorry for all of you up there. Hearing your stories makes me feel good about my little 30 degrees, the coldest we've been all winter.....
Today is suppose to be in the high 60's so I am going to take my plants out and give them a few rays of sunshine. It is calling for showers today and a low of 46 tonight....oh, burrrrr......LOL
Yall stay warm and take care of yourselves.....
Dee
No, I don't have anything other than electric heaters. It's beautiful outside today. The sun is shining and all the ice has melted. High today will be mid-50s. Problem is that so many limbs fell and the damage was so wide-spread. I just called (for the umteenth time) for update, and they say 30,000+ are still without power and that they will continue working until it is all back on, but it may be several days. There are power companies from neighbor states helping. About every hour, I call my house to see if the answering machine picks up. When(ever) I get myself saying that I'm not there, I'll know I have electric. Boy, I don't like this.
It makes me feel so sad know that some of you are having the problems that you are. I just don't know what to say because I know that nothing will help . . but a change in the weather. Hang in there and hopefully in a month or so the worst will be over with.
Dee, that is the cutest picture that I have ever seen of a kitty. It brought a smile to my face because it is so adorable how she has positioned herself against the heater for warmth.
