You have aphids. Nasty little creatures.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

Thanks Brugie will what i have kill them?
They are pretty bad i plucked alot of the leaves off and threw away

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

What do you have? I know there are recipes here someplace for homemade remedies that work. Anything with an oily base will do the trick and if you can just take the brugs outside and hose them off, under and over the leaves, that will get rid of a lot. You just have to watch for the eggs to hatch and get rid of them before they have a chance to lay eggs for the next generation.

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

theres a ton of threads around here that have recipes for stuff to kill them. i hate aphids!! i would just search for 'aphids' and you will find all sorts of funny ways to kill them.

and be sure to at least get that plant (and others that have them) out of the GH or kill them fast, because aphids have the 1st fastest (or 2nd, cant recall0)reproduction on the planet. they get out of hand really fast. good luck!!

I had them on my butterfly weed bushes last summer. I used some stuff called Garden Safe that I bought at the grocerty store. Did a great job until I came home from the nursery with more of them! But again, it knocked em for a loop. You can also spray right on the bloom and it had no negative effect that I could see. I have never tried it in the GH...Hope you get rid of those guys soon!!!

I say better aphids than mites! I just found some starting outside so I used Neem oil for I had a hand sprayer already filled.

If you can, wash the leaves off using your fingers to dislodge them. Then I spray with palmolive dish soap in a sprayer. IT REALLY WORKS!!

I have also used that Bayer tree and Bush systemic and it kills bugs for 1 year with just 1 application! Easy to apply, for you just apply to soil!

Get rid of aphids fast for they are the best way to spread disease!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm going to go buy some of that stuff. Do I need to worry about being exact on the measurements when applying?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

you measure the circumference of the trunk (maybe the height also) and that tells you how many ounces to put in 2 gallons of water. Then you just water with it! So it is not exact.

I have applied it straight and then added water after also once. no harm!

so easy!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks. Now I just have to remember to buy the stuff.

This is the stuff that I used last summer that I was very happy with. It is not expensive, but it is effective...

you could get a whole bunch of ladybugs and turn them loose in your greenhouse!
wouldnt that be interesting?
no, seriously.. that would probably be bad, though they would most likely take care of your aphid problem, you would then have the problem of being swarmed by ladybugs when going into your GH, and having to pick them out of your hair and off of your clothes.. and.. well it could be annoying :)
i would just hose your plants off really good with some soapy water and then maybe use a cottonball with alcohol directly on the remaining affected areas to kill the persistent nasty little buggers :)
and repeat as necessary

springsong-if you have sevin, (since you mentioned it) it will certainly kill the aphids. I think sevin will kill everything. It worked to kill aphids on my roses last summer. I try to only use it when there are no lady bugs or mantids around as I'd bought those for control originally.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Speaking of Ladybugs, I am planning on buying some from Gardens Alive in the Spring. Wonder how they would work in a GH?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Kaufmann,
I released ladybugs in my greenhouse but the aphids multiply too quick for the ladybugs in my experience.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Ada, you needed more ladybugs. LOL!! I read someplace how many aphids a ladybug can eat in a day and I was surprised that it wasn't more.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I think half of what I bought were dead on arrival but there was supposed to be 3,000 of them.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

same here. they didn't make a dent.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Did you get rid of your aphids Bonnie? I'd almost rather have mites than aphids.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Ugh....I've not paid much attention to my brugs this week after Xander was born. Oh my....today I thought I would check on them and water what needed water! OOoooooo....I have aphids. ....I hate those nasty looking little things. I'm dousing the leaves in hot hot water and de-leafing most! I'm on my way to Lowes to find something to get rid of these nasty little boogers~!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Brinda, I found aphids on one of mine in the garage today too. Where do they come from when they haven't been there ever before? I've got to get out there and spray with something.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

they are down to just a tiny few. I just filled the sprayer up with soap water and a little oil and everytime i see one, it gets a blast.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

i promise you that you did not catch them from this thread Lol mine are looking better.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

LOL

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

lol!! nope, didn't get them from this thread, that's for sure. I was really pleased today in the gh, I think plain soapy water with oil has done them in, where no chemicals would.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

If you can, just take your plant outside and spray them off with the hose. That usually takes care of them for me when I find them outdoors on plants. They are easy to get rid of compared to spider mites.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

much too cool to do that!! Lord, just give me one nice day soon!!! lol

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Putting mine under hot water helped so much. I did it and then went back in a hour and did it again. I didn't make it to Lowe's today, I will check them later and run hot water on them again if needed.

I'm with you Bonnie....it's 25 degrees now...expecting rain all day tomorrow and then snow....Ughhhhhhhhh

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I do love the cuttings in water, so easy to take care of. take em out, soak in hot water, put em back! I wish everything was in water! LOL!
