H compacta variagated

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I have a plain green one and a variagated one in the same pot. Potted at the same time. The plain one is growing like crazy. The variagated one is not really growing and its "leaves" at the base of the stem have gone grayish and crispy. What's wrong?

Hmmm sounds like the lower stem part died off thus shoot is not getting any water supply.
See if the stem near the soil is dried up and woody. If it is, cut the stem above the dried part where some healthy green stem is available and stick the cutting into the soil with the first node about 1/4" below the soil level.
You can use rooting hormones but it's not a must. Keep soil moist but not wet and do not let the doil surface dry out until you are sure that the cutting has rooted well.

Thanks, Panamon, I'll do that now.

I do believe you're right. I better watch that water supply. The healthy green ones were probably taking all the water.

This phenomen (dried up stem) might not be directly related to water being pulled away by the other one in the pot. It may have been a poorly rooted or damaged cutting/plant and this can also happen in the middle of a long vine and I dunno why.

Hi Molly,
Have you checked for root rot?? Last summer, I divided a full pot I bought because I was going to share some w/ a friend. I divided and potted two pots of the same Hoya and kept them for a few weeks before I saw my friend. One started to wilt and die pretty fast, the other seemed healthy even though they were both side by side and were watered the same. I finally unpotted the one that was doing poorly and for some reason that one suffered root rot. I then had to trim off the healthy vines to root. I was glad I potted it in two pots so I did have one to give to my friend.

No I didn't look at the roots, good idea tho, as soon as it stops raining I will go check and follow your advise. Thanks so much Gemila

Root rot often happens with compacta if the soil had been allowed to dry out too much and the roots had died off because of it. The dead roots rot once the soil moisture is high again after watering.
