What to do with the top part of a log cutting that's dead

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

What should I do about this? Guess I should've cut it off prior to potting it up, but I didn't know what I was doing when these arrived. As usual, thank you all for your help!!! Gretchen

Gretchen, I don't know if what I do is 'right', but: I just leave it - most of the time a new shoot comes up from the roots. I usually cut the 'dead' stalk down to 8" and water it once a month or so. If, in a couple of months of good light, nothing is happening, I just stick it in the window and forget about it. After another month, I pull it out of the pot to check for live roots, and if I find none, I toss it.

I would just get out a good saw and cut it back as far as you can without hurting the new shoot. It won't hurt anything to leave it there, but it would be harder to remove once there was taller growth in the way.

Shirley: That's what I wondered. So it won't hurt it to saw it off? I'll get the power saw going tomorrow morning... Thank you and Kay, thank you for your response!

Gretchen, that looks like some cuttings that I received from Ebay. After awhile I threw mine away because they looked like dead sticks. I should have saved them, because I note that yours are putting out new growth. Oh well, live and learn. I think I must be too impatient.

Looks like a ready made stake to me!I would not worry, the new shoot will take off,you can cut it back as far as you want, like Brugie says, just be careful of the new baby.

Thank you all! I have a good ryobi saw that I will use tomorrow to buzz that dead part off.

Shirley: believe it or not this was the first of those "dead sticks" to show any signs of life. I have two others from that person that are about that far along and six others that are showing no signs, but also aren't rotten, so I can't bring myself to pitch them yet. Its really odd, because all the others are doing so wonderfully!

Edited to be sorry that this picture got on again :(

Love the picture on it's side. Just looks like a different picture to me. I think you will be surprised at how easy that wood will cut. Easier than when they are green.

I figured that it won't be too hard... I sawed the "scabs" off the bottom of all that I received in that batch as per the seller's instructions and being the lazy one that I can sometimes be, decided not to go to the trouble of getting my saw out from under a pile that my husband has created in our storage building. Instead I used an old, serrated kitchen knife, and in the process nearly took off my left index finger LOL -- I can laugh about it now... Needless to say, it will be a saw tomorrow. I only hope I don't kill the poor thing...

I use a Hacksaw.it will cut easier with the picture sideways!

Yeah, Root. I thought of that too, so I knew someone would comment! LOL Honestly I intended to post a picture of a nicer one, but after that I decided to quit for today......................

Don't forget to clean the loppers. :)

You are doing great!

Hi, Michele. How are you doing? Haven't seen you on the forum lately.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gretchen, your brugs look really good. You will have some great trees this summer. Wasn't hard wood to cut, was it?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm great Sylvia!! I think you are just missing me. I have been stirring up, I mean replying here and there. :) I just haven't really posted anything original in awhile. LOL

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

No Shirley, it just snipped right off and was easier than getting the saw out and setting it up :) Thanks for you help!!!

Dee: I know its pretty pathetic! It was in one of the "lots" that I bought on e-bay. They all look pretty similar. Some have a few tiny leaves, some have nothing but little roots. I just refuse to give up on them because there are a few nice varieties if they make it...

Sorry to butt in on your thread, Gretchen, but I just had to find out how sweet little Michele was doing with her wee little sweetie that will be here soon.

I wouldn't give up either.....until that stick rots and falls over I would still hold out some hope.
These plants can really fool you sometimes.....
