Paperwhite Narcissus, Paper-white Narcissus, Narcissus papyraceus 'Ziva' (Narcis

How pretty...I just realized that I missed taking a picture of mine! I was very proud that they bloomed right at Christmas when I wanted them to. My husband hates the "fragrance" they emit...smells a little like urine or something. My Thalia daffodils smell like that, too, and what a shame. They are so lovely.

Wow, what timing. These don't usually start blooming until January here. Did you force them and grow them in the house?
Oh, thanks for posting a comment. The post with the photo I did not not post. It is the photo and the comments I posted for the plant. Because you posted your comment it appeared. Now I can tell the PDB guys what the problem is.

Narcissus tazetta var. papyraceus

This plant has up to 20 small star-shaped, small cupped white blossoms in umbels. Shown blooming in January, it is one of the earliest bulbs to bloom. The leaves are glaucous and broad. It is often grown indoors and does not need to be chilled. (San Antonio, Tx.)

Yes, I bought the bulbs on clearance at Walmart about mid-November (5 for $1) and put them outside for a few weeks in the shade until the weather got too cold, then finished them in the greenhouse. I did not bring them into the house until they started to bloom.
By the way, I posted at least one picture yesterday (poison ivy) that is not showing up today. Guess I will wait another day and see if it appears.
We have a big icestorm in progress at the moment. Hope the power doesn't go off.

Wow, the bulbs were 5 for a dollar! What a good deal. I guess the small was a little overpowering in the house. The post with the photo above should not be there. I notified the DG guys and Baa said that there has been a problem the past few days and that Dave is working on it. I had noticed that the dates of the postings were incorrect for awhile too. Maybe this is why your photo hasn't appeared yet or a lot of photos have been uploaded this weekend. I saw on the Weather Channel last night that you guys were going to have an ice storm. Poor you. Ice storms are the worst. I would rather have a lot of snow than a lot of ice. I keep telling my husband that we are going to be iced up here within the next 3 weeks. I hope not. I hope the storm is not too bad. Be warm and be safe.

Well, it wasn't too bad, about 1/4 inch of ice or less. Here is a pic I took today, it is an arborvitae:

Nice photo. I hope you don't receive anymore than that. My 2 stepdaughters live near Seattle. They had a doozie of an ice storm 2 weeks back. You'll probably laugh to hear this, but that much ice here would probably close the freeways. Very few people know how to drive on ice down here and the city crews don't have enough equipment to handle the problem. One year we had a horrible ice storm. I believe it was in the early 80s. I can't remember how much we received, but it downed trees and rooftops collasped. My neighbor wanted icycles one year so he ran the water sprinkler all night on his Chinese tallow tree when the temperature fell into the 20s. Most of the limbs broke off on one side. I was proud that I refrained from calling him a dummy when he was using some choice words the next morning as he surveyed the damage. Yep, sometimes us Texans aint got no sensibilties.

What a moron. Poor guy never had any experience with frozen plants I guess. One has to be very careful, they break so easily if brushed against. I was going to pick up some fallen limbs, but they were frozen to some junipers so I will have to wait til they thaw. Supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow today...Yippee.

When we see a few snowflakes we are thrilled. 1 to 3 inches of snow here and the whole city would shutdown and have snowball fights. It has been a long time since we have had any snow accumulation at all. Last year it snowed lightly for a little while (20 minutes or so). The year before it snowed for a little while. Interestingly enough, each time it was when one of my step-daughters who lives near Seattle was visiting. She wanted some warm weather and sunshine. Each time my other step-daughter who lives near Seattle visits in the summer, San Antonio manages to be under tornado warnings and flashflood watches for at least a day or so. I love thunder and lightening, but not tornado watches. She said that there are few lightening storms where she lives so she and her kids sort of enjoyed. But they wanted to come down to enjoy the sun not see more rain. I love visiting Seattle when it is in the upper 90s to 100 here and in the 70s there. I never want to leave. The vegetation is so beautiful there. I feel like I have come back to a desert after my visit.

Yes, I have heard that everything grows so well up around Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver Island. A vacation there has been on my wish list forever...I bet they have a lot of weeds and slugs to go with all that growth.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Be sure to go to the Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC. on Vancouver Island. We stayed there all day and I had to be practically dragged out. I wanted to hide somewhere and stay all night. I couln't believe there were no weeds and there were no crews weeding. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Maybe they weed at night. Maybe you will be able to go someday. I hope so.
