Post by Ginlyn: XP hangs at desktop during startup

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

NOTE: Ginlyn posted this originally. It was on another thread, so I copied it here in case others are having this problem and might not see the other post.

Stumped....I think my computer has crashed or something. I have a Dell XP that was a year old Dec 17,so therefore the warranty has run out,as I didn't get the extended one.

When I turn it on,it takes a while for the desktop to come up and then there are no icons or task bar. I tried dragging the arrow down and around to see if I could get the task bar, but it wasn't there. The hour glass will flicker on and off like it's trying to do something but nothing comes up.

The only way I can turn it off is hit the power button. If I hit Ctrl,Shift and Escape a box sometimes comes up saying program is not responding, but doesn't say what the program is. If I click end task, I still have to push the power button to shut it down. I suppose I'll have to wait for my DD to come over and call Dell because I know nothing about technical things. Has anyone had this problem?
