Fat Goldfish

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Are adult common goldfish supposed to be kind of fat? They aren't slender like the young ones in the store. They have a definite belly, both males and females. I feed them on weekends but the rest of the week they fend for themselves.

hmmm? do they seem farily active? Its hard to say, but sometimes parasites can bloat them, are their scales healthy? If they are stand out it can be dropsy--*pinecone disease* but I dont want to make you parinoid,--perhaps they just have a nice lil food chain goin on and live off whats in the pond--I rarely feed my fish except to give them a lil fat in the late fall and when the temps get high enough in the early spring. As long as they are active, they dont have any red streaks or a sudden loss of color?--I wouldnt be worried.

They seem healthy. They're active and their scales and color are fine.

KELLI, if the fish are active and don't show any signs of problems. I would say they are just well fed , mine are 6 years old in a 1400 gal pond and all are fat and healthy. They can and will get a lot to eat just in the pond, algae etc.
