Well, I've a number of unknown brug seeds from one seed pod that grew from one brug last season. I've put most of them into the Deno method of germination. I soaked them first so I expect they may germinate more quickly than I expect. I'm thinking about "seed sitting" them on a trip we have scheduled for a week. Do you think it will be okay to take them with me with my carry on luggage? I figured I'd take a heating pad along too just to keep them warm in their temporary home. Is this crazy or what???
Air Travel with my Deno Seeds?
and I thought I was obsessed :)
LOL! When Monika said she never knew which seed might be the "one", I became a little more obsessed.
How could you possibly not try germinating them all to see if you've got the perfect brug? Maybe there's a better way to choose which ones to try, but until I figure out that one, I'm gonna have to go with trying to germinate them all!
DH is gonna have a heart attack but hopefully he won't know until we are there :)
And you'll expect us to bail you out of jail with your little experiments too, won't ya? LOL
Now I've heard everything! LOL!! I can just see you taking your seeds out of the suitcase to care for them and trying to explain to your DH that you haven't totally lost it. You better keep a journal of this trip with word for word dialogue. It will be a big hit.
Well, ya, isn't that what friends are for :)
Wouldn't they be fine at home, as long as they did not dry out?
Yes, but as I read the different posts, I get the impression that these germinate really fast especially if they are soaked first. If they really do germinate quickly and start to take off, I don't want them to die of humidity without light or air.
Yes, I'll try to keep a diary of this trip. It ought to be interesting! Getting them home might be a totally different story depending on what happens.
Take an empty VCR case with you to put them in for travel. Wouldn't want them to get squished and broken.
Great idea, Brugie ~ thanks much!
They will do fine Morph! LOL too cute!
I sent some cross country in an envelope, at not the warmest time of year, and one had started to sprout when it got to the east coast.
LOL Morph! Let us know how they like their vacation!
Gee Shelly maybe we should get you to send us all our seeds!
lets see... they were going east, so I think you should send em to me Kell... better odds that way! :o)
I can just see us takin up a collection to bail you out?--*like a round robin but cash* you know, yall dont think Im parinoid or anything but this whole brugmansia thing is starting to sound like an addiction...like an obsesive compulsive disorder.....Morph if any one those seeds turn out to be something wonderful you gotta name it something funny....
lol ~ yes, and i'll need everyone's help with that! doubtful, but fun to dream :) anyway, gives me something to do while dh is conferencing... i'll watch my seeds ~ lol
so umm Morph do you think Dh might consider takin a left across the pond and stopping by monika's? I mean if your gonna do the whole plane thing, you might as well do the smuggling thing too right? n if you get busted? umm well, :S we will write you and send you all kinds of nice pics this summer. lololol cheryl
Anyone flying to a Tropical vacation area?? I would like to send you prepared deno envies with some of my hard to germinate 'nana and palm seeds. They should start quickly in the right zone.
;-P
Morph, I would leave them at home. If you have covered the seed box with saran wrap, the moisture cannot escape. When they start germinating, light is needed to keep the stems short. They also will form roots first before they will start growing.
Guess I'm not worried about keeping the moisture. I'm more worried about how long they can thrive (or not die) if they sprout in the moist paper towels and I don't get to them for 10 days or so. If they lay there with roots & sprouts, but no light, do you think they'll wait for me to transfer them to a healthy location when I return?
I would apply from towels to soil and leave the seeds at home. The shaking during the travelling could kill the seedlings. In light wet soil they will survive 10 days.
That's a good idea, Ludger! Now, why didn't I think of that? Thanks :) Now, I'll need a new hobby while vacationing ~ lol!
Welcome Morph:-)
your new hobby while vacation??????looking for brugcuttings in other gardens.....stay legal:-)
Wish you a happy vacation!!!!
May i ask what cross the seeds are morph? just sitting here through this whole post wondering LOL
Ludger, I love starting the seeds so much that going on vacation is sometimes not what I expect...
But, you've a good point about visiting other gardens and examing what thrives in good old Florida :)
Springsong, my best guesses for the partner are one of three:
1 - datura currant swirl (extremely unlikely)
2 - Pink Insig (don't think it recovered in time to produce a simultaneous blossom)
3 - A visiting bee that chose the donor :)
Morph, if your Brug was pollinated by that fabulous Datura, you'd best stay home and pamper those seeds!
LOL ~ that brings me back to the beginning of this entire thread, John! Now you understand my dilemna a bit more, perhaps?
I've two separate deno starters and some in the rockwool. I think I'll have to take the chance and take one of the deno starters with me! I know there may be lots of explaining involved, but I just can't bear to leave these home wondering where I am!
such a good mommy----- :) cheryl
Hey, I wonder if those patches for heat would work just as well LOL
