Sweet Violet, English Violet, Garden Violet
Viola odorata
This is the first sweet violet bloom completely open on January 19, 2004. It is wonderful to be able to see the center of this small bloom up close. I could not see its detail and beauty with the naked eye. (San Antonio, Tx.)

The details as enlarged in the photo are awesome! I have been wanting some for a while. Where can I obtain some? I had some at another location where we lived and brought some here but a rust did away with them. I have had hundreds of the other kind invading my husband's lawn; that is not the kind I want. Yours is perfectly beautiful. I can almost smell it as that is one of my favorite fragrances.
A beautiful picture of a beautiful flower...the details are so much more vivid to my old eyes when the picture is a large one. One day I was taking closeups of an orchid I had just bought and when I viewed it full size on my computer I saw itsy bitsy scale insects. It worked better than a hand lens.
EvelynDeR, I bought 6 of these plants at Home Depot or Walmart. I think I have seen seeds for them there too. As you can see, its blooms are a deep, rich purple. Unfortunately, 3 died but I don't know why. I think my big old dog urinated on them. I took this photo because I was so happy to see the blooms. The other violets that were invading the lawn ... did they have white blooms?
EvelynDeR and Toxicodendron, I am always amazed when I see the closeup photos on my computer. You just can't see the details with the naked eye, especially on small blooms. I too have found insects on my plants that I could not see when I looked at the photo. Usually, my pansies are attacked by insects when the weather starts to warm some and I am not aware of it until they are damaged severely. This year, I am going to take closeups every few days to examine the plants for insects so I can head them off before they start killing the plants.
Speaking of viewing pictures at large size, I am so spoiled to it now, that I never print any vacation photos unless I go to the 8 x 10 size! So I don't print many, LOL. We have our photos set as a screensaver so we look at them that way.
Evelyn, I would send you some violets, but I have the highly invasive kind that comes up from seed everywhere. Sorry!
Susan, are the violets of which you speak that come up everywhere the ones that bloom white?
I've never seen a yellow blooming one before. The yellow shade of the bloom is really super. The small blooms really show up well. The purple invasive one is a beautiful plant.
Well, I see both pics got a little more blurry after uploading...oh well.
Susan, a lot of my photos do too especially ones that have a lot of red in them. Some photos when I preview them are so bad after uploading them that I just hit the back button and don't post them. Also, the colors change somewhat on the upload.
