The Household Searchlight Recipe Book, 1931

First published in 1931, “The Household Searchlight Recipe Book” is a beautiful, hardbound cookbook published by the Household Searchlight service station, a seven-room house once dedicated to “working out the problems of homemaking common to every woman who finds herself responsible for the management of a home and the care of children.”

Pineapple Bread

3/4 cup honey
3 tablespoons shortening
1 egg, well beaten
2 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup nuts
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup bran
1 cup pineapple juice

Combine honey and shortening. Add egg and beat well. Sift flour and measure. Dredge nuts with1/2 cup flour. Sift remaining flour with baking powder and salt. Add alternately with bran, pineapple juice and nuts to honey mixture. Pour into well-oiled loaf cake pan which has been lined with wax paper. Bake in moderate oven at 350 F about 1 1/4 hours. Store 24 hours before using. 1 loaf.
