Do you have to live down South to grow Brugmansias?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

They are so beautiful! I'm in zone 5b (yikes). This is probably a silly question, but I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a variety that can be grown in the North.

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

Any of them can be grown in your area.Use a big pot,cut it back and bring it inside for the winter.Brugs grow just fine in containers.Mine do better in pots here for I can move them around to take advantage of afternoon shade.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Monika is one of(if not) the best in the world! She is zone 5.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Poppysue in Maine and Snowhermit in New Hampshire both have grown them very successfully. There is no reason that you can't too!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Shirley1,You need to be on your own list!
Even though you have a zone on some.Karrie, this is one of the most prolific, worth your time plants.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Well kewl! I will start a thread asking if anyone has some seeds to share!

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Anybody can grow them. Heck even me. You just have to bring them in for the winter in our zones.By the way welcome Karrie.

Please excuse me Karrie, my profound apologies....WELCOME to Dave's Garden & the Brug Forum! Not to worry, you'll get plenty of seeds and cuttings once the weather warms up a bit!

Thanks Root, you've got quite a collection of totally awesome Brugs and Daturas yourself!

LOTS of incredible gardeners with "green thumbs" at DG!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

S1md,I look up to your advice, you gals here are the bet!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Shirley, your making me miss the argumentative Tonny, lol.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

NO!!
I am zone 6 and on a mountain ridge.
Brugs love it here! ..((o:
You can grow them!

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

NO!!! And you would have to live WAY down south before overwintering is not a consideration.

If you don't already know, Brugs are EASY to root from cuttings, even in water! Some people just take cuttings to keep inside over the cold months, and have blooming plants each year.

And now is a great time to start Brugs from seeds, for flowering plants this year!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Welcome Karrie! Hope to see you as a regular on here. You can add your 2 cents even if you do not have any brugs yet. We often get off topic! That is usually the most fun.

Hi Karrie, and welcome!!
You will do fine in your zone, as I learned (and am learning) You picked a GREAT time of year to ask about them. Im sure you will get some cuttings and/or seeds this spring, and hopefully will see them bloom this summer.

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

they are suckin you in Karrie----you'lll start surfing thru these forums and one words keeps popping up over and over--addicition, yes dear Karrie a very serious and uncurable BRUG addiction. *sinister laugh lol* you have been warned!! welcome by the way` some wonderful folks round here. cheryl

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Welcome, Karrie. Thank goodness this is one addiction that is not against the law. At least, not unless you smuggle in some of those beautiful European brugs we can't have yet. lol

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

You know what's weird? I couldn't find anything on the database on Brugs, but noticed the Brugs Database, and that didn't really have a whole lot. Does anyone have a pic of that "Monika" one that rootdoctor mentioned?

I did show a few pics to my hubby and he thinks they are awesome looking!

Oh - one question - I am probably going to pot mine, so that I can take them indoors during the cold months. Can someone recommend the size pot I use? It needs to be portable, yet, will need room for the roots.

Thanks All!

Karrie

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. Monika is a hybridizer and she has lots of beautiful ones! But she lives in Germany so we all dream and plot on here how to get them here!!

The smallest I use for an adult brug is 15 gallon. You could pot a pot (5 gallon) within a pot and then pull out the smaller inner pot, cut off the roots from the outside the inner pot and part of the canopy and then let them go dormant in your house in the fall.

Good luck! Let us see pics when you get them!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

LOL! Ok! I was wondering why I couldn't find a "Monika" Brug in search engines! (I am very purple right now!) lol!

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

Im still pretty green here myself,---people here are down to earth Karrie,----if we make fun of each other, its not because of what we do or do not know, its cuz we are chronically silly at times,---and being silly is half the fun. cheryl

Karrie, click on Monika's name in a post. It will take you to a page that will give you some options...one being to click on all the threads she has started. There you will find her brug pictures. It is fun to go back and read and wish....

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Ya picked some great pictures root! She really is an amazing woman in more ways than one.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

They are easy to find,if you follow Brugies instructions above, you can go to anyones home page, and view threads they started, that is what I did,I just hyper linked them here.
Monika has produced some of the best Brugs, and I always feel so lucky to be able to talk to her here. She freely shares information, and wants to see us all grow great Brugs. It is just too bad about that big pond in between us!
