Close Enough to Spring for Me

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

The transplanted kaffir lillies (clivia) are on the rise. I had to get them out tf the real flower beds because they have foots from heck. I handed they out all over town and then is see small ones in the nursery for $22. They must like their new cement encircled home cause they are all starting to bloom.

I'm still waiting on mine to bloom. It is about a two year old plant. Do I have a lot more waiting to do?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I counted leaves on mine, have at least 15 before they bloom(this is the yellow one), orange ones bloom sooner. All are at least 4-5yrs. old.

I wouldn't think so. They do seem to like some sun. Just not all the time. I will assume it is in a pot. I have never potted any but mine seem to bloom regularly. Some took a couple of years when I transplanted tham to my only shady area. Foolish me. I am still digging them out.

Well, I'll hang in there. I'm not terribly patient, but I'll try. Thanks.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Hmmmmm I never counted the leaves. I know that some of my orange ones don't have anywhere near that many. I will have to look tomorrow in the light.

Piedmont, MO(Zone 6a)

I just read in Parks Seed catalog that it takes seven years to bloom from seed....and my seed is in the mail. I will post a picture if any bloom in 2011, LOL.

frogsrus,

Thanks for answering a question for me.

I was just at my local nursery and they had a ton of "Kaffir Lily" plants. I'd never heard that name before.

I was thinking they looked a lot like Clivia.

Unfortunately, now I'm going to have to go back and get some of the orange ones...

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I do believe they are one and the same...

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

where do you guys get your clivias at anyway, I've never seen any for sale, and ebay has them for 40.00 or more. that's sky high . Can't afford that. LOL

Lol DD is sitting here with me and she says they come up like weeds. They are 22 to 50 dollars even here.

7 years from seed? Wow. I barely have the patience for biennials.

Here is one getting taller by the day.

I see about 15 leaves, is this right? This is the one that blooms so easy for me, I have two red seeds hanging on it now.

Got my yellow one at Wayside Gardens $70. plus postage. Came in 8" pot/soil.

Clivia, like callas and cannas, bloom best when rootbound. They like a bright light or partially shaded spot, no hot afternoon sun.

They come in orange, red and yellow. I believe there is also a variegated leaf variety, but maybe somebody expert can chime in on that.

They are slow growing, hence the expense in containers. Very common in CA but not elsewhere, apparently.

look at this for 3 seeds.....

And you don't even get a picture.........unbelieveable!

I wonder how much a seedling costs. That is amazing.

That yellow/orange one is beautiful. I'm not sure what mine is, but I think it is orange. Will have to write to PJ and ask again. Yes, again. My memory is shot. Will have to put a plant marker in it this time. Do you often get seed pods Gloria? Great pictures.

Theres a yard near University ave in S.D. that had its flower beds completely full of the species type of these..the flowers are pendulous and tube shaped. On Robinson ave near Park ave.

Hagerstown, MD(Zone 6b)

I recieved an orange on in a trade this past fall and did some research on them. From what I remember off the top of my head they do take 5-7 yrs to bloom and there is a count on the leaves it would have before blooming. I also read that seeds from yellow plants don't always produce yellow seedlings.
I was going to order the yellow seeds from Parks but I think I will just try to aquire one in a trade this year and if all else fails I will just have to fork out the money for the yellow. They sure are gorgeous.

P.S. The sweet lady who traded me the orange one I have said it had never bloomed for her and within a month after recieving I had buds. I think it was meant to be my plant. She is taking a rest period now (I read they need to do that after blooming).

These are not mine, but I thought someone might enjoy the picture.

Shirley: On the orange one, it usually has two bloom stems, then it has always formed its' own seed pods, I do not try to pollinate it, must be self fertile. I have pollinated the yellow one with its' own pollen, has never formed seed pods.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Gloria. Now I just have to wait for bloom.

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, Floorcraft Garden Center in SF has Clivia in 4" cylidrical pots for $13 and 6" pots for $23.

I picked up a nice looking orange 4" pot.

Seemed like a pretty good deal, even if it doesn't flower this year.

Plus, I couldn't resist getting a Eucomis comosa bulb/tuber while I was there.
