Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, that is my kind of plant. Hey Cindy, if you come to the Iowa Roundup, I'd sure take it off your hands. LOL!! Does it ever have babies or how do you propagate it?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

ZZ,
Yes Cannas are toropicals, they need to be dug in the fall.

Lakeview, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Scooterbug, now do you know where I can find a canna called "tropicana"

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If mine make it to spring, I can send you a start. They are in the shop and it is heated to about 60. I have no idea what shape they are in right now, but if okay later.........count on me. If you can get one before that, go ahead.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I would love a piece if anyone winds up with extra.

Lakeview, MI(Zone 5a)

thanks brugie, I,ll keep in touch and let you know of my progress in finding one, hope yours make it.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

There is NO easier plant to grow than ZZ.
It's a succulent Aroid.
There are no known pests, except that pesky grower who over-waters them, and they are pretty drought proof.
Anything but North window light is OK for Wintering and dappled shade in Summer.
We've had ours for a year and a half and it's about tripled in size (started w/ 6 shoots 8" high in a 6" pot which is almost full). It just keeps throwing new starts from the edges.
I've seen 3' long shoots but ours is about 2'.

The one at HD (where we got ours) was probably over-watered. If there is any good growth left it should come right back if repotted.

OOHHHHh,maybe I will put out the bucks for it.......

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

In season Canna Tropicannas are very common even at places like Home Depot. There is more than one color of tropicanna.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

You can winter over the tubers in a box of damp peat in a cool location also.Mine do their winter sleep in cold closet.

Lakeview, MI(Zone 5a)

scooterbug, I'll try home depot since there is one near me. thanks for the info, I didn't realize there were different kinds of tropicana.I'm looking for the one with vibrant colored leafs. They should start selling them about april I think.

Piedmont, MO(Zone 6a)

I got a very small one of these back in 1999 (boy that sounds like a century ago) and love it. It is pretty large now. The new growth is lighter green, then darkens to a dark forest green later. It is VERY shiny if kept clean. The only big drawbacks are:
1) Very easy to knock off leaflets if brushed with your leg, etc. Locate away from traffic.
2) Gets really rootbound (because of the storage of water) and that makes it difficult to divide without stressing it.
Other than that, it is one great plant. I keep mine in a North window all winter...this causes the leaflets to space themselves a bit farther apart on the few new leaves it makes in winter, but otherwise it is happy. Don't overwater it in the winter.
I saw one in Key West that was about 4 feet high and across. I did a double take before realizing what it was.
Good luck with yours if you get one!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

going to HD today to see if any are left alive.....

crestedchik,

Hope I'm not too late. I can send you a start of the ZZ plant. I have it in the GH somewhere....its true..very easy to grow.

Just let me know.

Daisy

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hey Daisy, are you the one I got the Pink Princess Philo from? It is doing well. Shoot I probably have you mixed up with someone else. I've already done that once. LOL!!

If you ever have an extra ZZ start, I'd be interested. I'm sure we could work something out.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

getting in line hoping one day you'll have another!

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Brugie... welcome to the club of confussion! I have Pink Princess, but can't for life of me remember who I have sent some too...LOL.

Brugie and tiG, I'll check my plant on Monday to see how much of it I have and if I can spare three pieces I'll surely send you some. I'm still waiting on crestedchik to respond. I'm hoping she didn't buy it on eBay because she sending me some coleus plants. If she did then for sure I have one start to send and since Brugie asked first I would send it to her. Don't worry tiG, I'm pretty sure I can get another small start off of my plant. Since it requires no care at all I can't tell you when I looked at it last.

Look for me on Monday evening.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

please don't hurt it, I don't mind standing in line for a while:)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I can wait too if it means hurting your plant. I bought my pink princess from someone for $15 and I think that included postage. Geez, I can't remember where it came from either. I just know I like it, even tho it is slow growing. Thanks so much and I'll keep checking back here or you can email me about the ZZ plant. It is too cold to mail here now anyway. We will be below zero in a couple of days. Burrrrrrr!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Seems to me you can start the ZZ plant with just one leaf,
I think I read that somewhere, maybe some one can correct me if I'm wrong, just took mine off the shelf and took a pic of it,grows better during the winter than the summer outside.
Just look at the one new leaf the big one since I brought it inside since October.

Tropicman,

I believe mine is about that size. I'll have to double check, it lives in the greenhouse. I've heard that one leaf would root also but I have never tried it. That give me something new to try. Its a tropical sucullent so it should root if it follows suit.

tiG and Brugie,

I will for sure try to root some leaves for you guys if I can't safely take three division off of mine.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hey that would be great. If you can't, I'll take Don's cat instead. That is a beauty!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well if you take one you have to take two!!LOL!
There a pair,,,of trouble,no matter what your trying to do,there right in the middle of it!!!
Wife was working on a wreath, turned to get a tool...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

OMG, they are adorable. Just what I'm looking for. Bet you would miss them even if they are a pair of trouble makers. Just too pretty!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yeah,I'd miss them every morning when I'm trying to put my socks on for work, they got to try and take them away from me,well its a game, for me to get up and give them a treat,so
they will leave me alone ,so I can finish getting drssed for work.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

beautiful cats, wow!! thanks FJ, ya'll are all the best.

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

tiG and Brugie,

I divided my plant into three parts and even got some plants started this morning before going to work. LOL!

I'll email with details now.

Enjoy,

Daisy

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thank you, will email you back!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Daisy. I mailed you too.

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

tiG and Brugie,

I still can't get my roadrunner email. My computer is down. I'll send you my work email so you can contact me that way. Sorry I meant to mention it but must have forgotten.

Daisy

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I got your email and am sending you snail mail.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I got your email with the work address. Just wondering if you can wait until we are past the frigid weather to mail to me. We are very cold right now. I'll get the stamp in the mail as soon as I can get to the PO. I would think that another month would warm us enough to mail to here.

PS. I do have your address. Both emails came through to me. Thanks.

Hi Brugie,

No problem in waiting. Just mail the stuff when you want me to send that way I'll make sure not to send it too soon. I'm the type that likes to get my end of the trade out as soon as possible. But I don't mind waiting as long as I have nothing here to show that I owe something to someone. LOL.

I'll send you my address.

Thanks,

Daisy

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks. Put my name on it and I'll get to the PO one day this week and be ready to mail the stamp to you at shipping time for us. Today it is just white, sunny, windy, and cold here. Very, very cold.
