Hello all
I am very new to this site. Due to this forum I am getting very interested in brugs. However I am at present trying germinate 5 brug seeds using the deno method. First I put them on damp kitchen towel and folded it over on them. Nothing seemed to happen. So now I have put the seeds on top of damp kitchen towel and sealed in a ziploc bag by our boiler. Unfortunately one seed seems to have got some mould on it. I did soak the seeds beforehand and pealed the coats off of them although I seem to have pealed two layers off two of them (right down to the white bit). Should I have done this? How long to brug seeds take to germinate?
Any advice would be most helpful.
Sue
starting brug seeds
Hi Prudence. Welcome!
I peel all of mine. I do not know what you mean about the layers. Sometimes I do not get all my brown covering off all of the seed. They still germninate.
You can soak them in a 10% bleach solution for 1 minute to help keep the mold at bay. Then put in a wet but not dripping paper towel. Fold the seeds in it. put in a ziplock bag. Check every week for germination. If you keep it warm that helps. Make sure when you check your hands are very clean for a wet warm environment can cause all sorts of things to grow. Germination can go fast or very slow! Most of mine in the bag take 2 weeks to 1 month.
I have switched just recently to the rockwool method and love it. This method they have started to germinate in 5 days. No mold!

Let us know how you do.
Hello Prudence,
Welcome to the world of Brugmansia!
It would help to know how long ago you started your Brugmansia seeds. They often take a month or more to germinate. Some may sprout earlier, but you will find erratic germination after that for some time.
I normally soak my seeds for 24-48 hours, changing the (warm) water daily. I seldom bother to peel the corky coating off the seeds, although this will let you know whether there is even the "bean" inside. Some seeds are "empty".
It sounds as if you removed not only the corky covering, but perhaps dug too deeply into the seed itself.
I have had good results just planting them in sterile seed starting soil after soaking. Keep moist, but not wet. Brugmansia seeds need some light to germinate, so do not plant too deep- about 1/4 inch is fine.
Hope this helps!
John
