Four years ago I was staying in a hotel just North of San Diego and noticed this beautiful tree on the grounds with big hanging flowers. I took a few of the pods with seeds back to NC with me and planted them. Not being much of a "Green Thumb" I was surprised to have three plants growing before long. The plants grew very straight with big leaves. The leaves were short lived, they seemed to fall off after a short period, but there was always new healthy leaves that came right behind them. I have recently figured that my plants are Brugmansias. My question is how do I get these guys to flower? How do I properly take care of them?

Brugs won't flower
Use lots of good fertilizer(I use Peters 20-20-20) twice a week and loose soil. They should have at least a half day of sun and don't cut them back. If you check through some of the old threads here, you will find lots of suggestions on how to grow them in different climates, tho most growing suggestions are basically the same. You can take cuttings in the fall to make more plants to share with friends. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your plants with tons of beautiful blooms on them.

Gary, I just wanted to wish you the best on your Brug. growing. Brugie is right. Lots and lots of fertilizer in the summer. I couldn't get mine to bloom until I started applying that fertilizer. I have been hooked ever since.

Thanks ladies, the information is excellant! I also just purchased 3 Brugs on-line. Now that I have some guidance I'm getting excited! Yes Scooterbug, this could be an addiction!
One more question. Do they bloom year round? I keep mine in a solarium off of my livng room. It varies in temperature thoughout the year, from about 55 to 80 degrees.
Gary
Boy Gary, if you could drag them outside in the summer, they might really love it. By the way, they will get very pot bound in a year's time. Maybe your older ones need to be re-potted. A lot of brugs that are planted in the ground and mulched well, will come back from the roots in your zone. Planting them in pot....well the bigger the better. I use a lot of 15 gallon size pots. Hope that you have great luck with your brugs and that they flower like crazy for you.
