Koi question

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

Hello all. Just moved to FL and left my pond behind. The fish conveyed with the house. It was very upsetting for my husband.

My last pond was large and in-ground. I am planning a new patio pond (due to small lot restrictions) and wanted to know what size pond (how deep and how many gallons) would a koi or two be comfortable with. Most the above ground containers aren't that deep. I don't have to worry about freezing or preditors. I heard Koi don't do well in small container ponds. Might have to get goldfish....

Thoughts?

No predators? what about those gators? They're EVERYWHERE down here!

Koi or goldfish are both carp under the glitzy exterior so they do better cool than warm.I am going to do a pond in FL and plan on making it 4 feet deep to avoid the high temps. In NY I made it 4 1/2 feet deep to avoid freeze-ups. One rule of thumb for aquarium fishes is a gallon per inch assuming controlled temperature and adequate filtration.
