Forced Bulbs

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

I have 7 pots of different bulbs in my fridge that I am forcing. The first pot will come out January 18 and about weekly after that, and I am really getting excited. I staggered them like that to give me a continuous display and to accommodate the ones that need a longer cold time. I give them a little drink every couple of weeks and today when I did, two of the pots have sprouts peeking out at me! What surprises me is that they are ones not due out of the fridge until March. I'll have to keep an eye on them and I might just have to get them out early! Oh, well. There is always a surprise to gardening!

once the leaves break free they will have to be in good light to prevent the leaves stretching in the dark

Thanks for the hint!

You may have had a plan when you put them into the refrigerator, but now you's better go with their plan!

I took my first pot of bulbs out of the refridgerator yesterday! Red hyacinth! I am so excited because in a couple of short weeks, there will be flowers.

I am taking these over to my mom's house. She has alzheimers and is basically a child again. But she loves babies, animals, and flowers. Red flowers in the middle of winter are such a treat.

I don't have a digital so will take pictures and post once my film is ready!

Thank you, and it is a lovely birthday. Cold but very sunny here and I have spent the day finally getting a layer of paint on my dining room and entry way. A bright cool mint. Not your normal birthday celebration, but what I wanted to do. Having dinner with friends, tonight, so not all work!
