I want to do my black/ lime plant thing under Chas Grimaldi & Dr. S. Black Magic Taro, Ilustrus, Blackie, Ace of Spade & Margarita sweet potato & coleus. Will it work? Any thought? I am so clueless with this stuff.
New Brug Area
I loved my coleus and sweet potato vine combos....threw in a few dark purple ornamental peppers to boot and wow! I love your Taro to add the height. You just have to keep a tight rein the blackie or marguerite so they don't bury everything else, but I think it's worth the effort. BTW...they look great with Tropicana and Bengal Cannas in the Background for height too. I'll go to photoisland and see if I can find my pics from the past season.
I can hardly wait for my first brugs to stand above all!
Beautiful! Whats the purple set against the lime? I love it.
Hey Bambi, your plants look great! You are going to have a beautiful garden when everything is in and fills out. You need to fill in with some of those caladiums that are on their way from the coop. That will be so pretty.
Hi Pancha, back2back is a very dear friend of mine. You will love her! It's nice to see you posting here. I'm excited to get to Frontier City to see everything you're doing come springtime. Pick out some places for more brugs and we will fill them in. BTW....your pics are just stunning! Makes me wish spring would hurry & get here!
Brinda :)
Nice pictures you all. Wish my yard was that green right now.
Sorry, I just re-read. Ornamental purple peppers! Must find some. Where's photisland... cyberspace. Hey Brin, you got me hooked on that illustrus!
back2back, your black/lime planting is a great idea!
I experimented with some contrasting plant combinations in large pots last season. One of the best was a large hanging box with Setcreasea purpurea (syn. Tradescantia pallida) and Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea'!
In full sun, the vining stems were a dark purple/black contrasting with bright gold/lime, completely covering the pot and trailing down several feet. These may be invasive though in your zone.
Xanthosoma maffafa aurea 'Lime Zinger'is a great contrast to Black Magic. Another is Canna 'Australia' (black/bronze) & 'Tropicana' (syn. Bengal Tiger). Underplanted with black leafed and lime colored coleus, Tradescantia 'Sweet Kate' (lime/yellow foliage with bright blue blooms), and the contrasting potato vines. What about Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens') at the front edge?
Mondo grass is a great idea. I saw somthing called purple majesty that I liked too.I haven't been able to find either.! Just got Canna Australia.I have cannas growing everywhere!! lOVE THEM!
'maintreefrog' is on his way over today with lots of surprises. I'm so excited I can barely type. He's bringing me a shredded white brug, passion vines & dwarf red nanas
I'm a happy camper! I'll take photos.
Bambi
I just started some canna seeds today. Now y'all have peaked my interest for the Sweet Potato vine. Is this a seperate cultivar than the sweet potatoes we eat?
......Lucky me ,
.............. I also got some blackleaved EE's from a kind DG'er that I am over-wintering in the house. I think I maybe heading for a beautiful display around all the brugs I have started .......Oh, Hurry Spring (-;
§
Yes, it is different from what we eat. I was told that the Margarite potatoes are edible so I cooked one....OMG, it was nasty. Woody and dry. Don't know what the others would be like though. I wouldn't hesitate to put the eating kind in around brugs myself. Would be beautiful vines and good eating all in one.
Scooterbug, I have looked at the potato roots of these vines, I wouldn't eat them. LOL. I just stopped in, wanted to show you some of mine. I have the yellow ones, which look green in the picture. I have dark burgundy ones and then the pink varigated ones (these turn solid green when they get older) I got them from a clients' to fill in ground space while I wait for the choicer plants to grow up and fill in the shade garden.
Hey poppysue I'm glad you posted the 'Red Dragon' persica, because I planted that at White Water a couple of years ago but didn't catch the name. It is really kewl looking, I think. I noticed last year that some of my sweet potato vines that I dug from the year before reverted to parent....leaves turned solid green. They still weren't the same as the yams we love to eat, though. I liked the spaces where I had lots of room to put large and tall background plantings like Russian Sage. It looked really nice w/the vines and the cannas and coleus.
Hey back2back.........photoisland.com....I've been storing photos there for free for about 4 years now. I'll send the visitor password to my site if anyone wants to look at the last 3 seasons. Not all were taken w/the nice digi-cam I have now, but they're okay. I'll go find the link and pw.
by the way...that first photo of marguerite with the lime sweet potato vine is growing with coppers in that bed, instead of coleus. I love my coppers, too!
Okay....what are coppers? Never heard of them and would love to know.
Coppers? What are they? I need to see!
Can I have the password? I'd love to look at your gardens.
Bambi
Pancha, please...send me that password also. I would love to see your past gardens!
BTW...what are Coppers? New to me!
Brin:)
Hey Bambi....how was your day with Joe? Did you get lots of goodies?
Bumping this back up hoping Pancha happens along! Needing more ideas! LOL
I sure hope it's not copperhead snakes?
Aren't there plants called coppers? I did a search one time, but didn't come up with anything.
I think they are a type of sedum or the like.
=0)
Oh...I thought they were like a coleus! What do I know? LOL I just thought they were pretty and colorful!
Are we talking about the red Dragon,I love it,I am going to have to get this plant.
Root...I don't know! Pancha posted pics up there of coppers! I don't know what they are, do you?
