Hello all, I've grown many herbs in my first two years of gardening, and most to all were bought from a nursery. I have Basil seeds to grow and sow on my own, but what about Rosemary, Mint, and Thyme? How do I start to grow these herbs from scratch(seeds, or some-way else)? Thanx, Danny
Rosemary, and other Herbs...
An easy way to grow rosemary is from cuttings.
Thanx BlueGrass from WildCats land. I'm going to try it in containers for now to see if the cuttings take. Danny
Rosemary, mint, and thyme can all be propagated from cuttings. Mint and thyme will give you a head start by using divisions (they already have the roots).
Rosemary...roots very well in nothing but perlite. Keep warm and moist, but not overly-wet.
Mint and thyme, put up some pieces with roots on them, simply pot up in a standard potting soil. Keep moist.
Happy growing Dan!
Shoe, if you have any Rosemary, would you root me a cutting or two? I love rosemary but lost mine. DH was watering my plants under the house for me during the holidays and he let it dry out too much. I shouldn't let anyone else water for me but just got too busy and took a chance. "Shhhh!" Don't "let on to him" that I am sad as it would make him sad too. None of the plants mean anything to him but I know and love all of them and all of them have a story or history. As a former farmer in his youth, plants are jsut plants to him and not something to mourn over. LOL!
Sure! Be sure to remind me when the weather warms up enuff for shipping, they might get frozen right now, eh?
FROZEN is the correct word, Shoe. I will definitely remind you but no need in it till the weather is nice once again. Good Goody Gumdrops! I am getting another rosemary plant thanks to Shoe! Yeah, Rah! I just love to walk by Rosemary and run my hands over it just to smell that wonderful aroma.
Elena, if you would like RoseMary, I have plenty of it? I have about 20 or so sprigs, about 6 to 10 inches. I just don't know what to do with them? If anyone wants good herbs, especially Rosemary, e-mail me your address, or I could e-mail you mine, to send out those beautiful sprigs. Have a great day, Danny
i normally just stick my rosemary cuttings in water and they root in less than a week, then once they've got lotsa roots, i put them in dirt.. or trade them off
i've got a few currently awaiting their new dirt homes.. lol
i've been told that rosemary does make flowers, and should make seeds.. but i've yet to see a single bud on my rosemary and i've had it for like 3 years..
almost makes me want to just throw it away and get one that i know will flower.. lol
it's kind of frustrating
but i'm not going to do that, because i didnt really buy it for flowers.. i bought it as a kitchen herb
as for thyme..
i've had *no* success with rooting thyme cuttings.. and i never see any offshoots or anything
i've got one thyme plant that i've had for about 2-3 years now and it's doing really well and thriving and flowering and being very happy but i would really like to be able to take cuttings successfully..
any ideas?
Kim
Danny, they would freeze now if you tried to mail them. After the weather gets warmer, if you still have any I would like to try rooting some. I can't have too many of them the way I like them. I never have had enough to cut off any for cooking purposes.
Miss Kitty, I raise my thyme in wide pots but used to have it in a raised bed surrounded by cross ties. I just ease off the shoots at the sides that are rooted. I don't know if all varieties have those though.
Does prostrate rosemary set out roots along branches laying on the ground, as do my thyme and oregano ? I want to get some this spring, and if that's how they multiply, I'll be sure to get them ASAP (and available) so I can have more than I'd paid for by summer ;)
TIA, Pambi
miss_kitty,Elena:
as far as i know all thyme roots from cuttings ro the bottom of the stem roots as it spreads. a freind or mine put his in hloes in black plastic to keep the weeds down then mulched ofer the blastic so it would look better and keep the heat out. As the thyme spreads all he needs to do is pull the plant up off the plastic, lop a piece off and stick it in the ground else were since it has already rooted into the composted mulch. another thing you can do is mound a little dirt around the plant and in a couple of weeks dig some of the plant away as it should have rooted by then. thyme also likes good dranage i have found it really took off in mushroom soil, while basil planted in the same bed did nothing
Thanks Troy. I will try that method in the spring as folks are always wanting cuttings of my thyme.
hrm. that's interesting
i'll have to try mounding dirt up around it..
cuz it's been planted in the same place for years, and it's still just *one* plant.. not spreading or making any effort to spread or anything at all
lol

miss kitty...I wonder if you have 'common thyme" (thymus vulgaris). It tends to grow in a more upright habit than the creeping thymes. (The creeping thymes will definitely sprawl along the ground and root at the joints.)
Have a pic by any chance?
yes, i do have thymus vulgaris
i know that for a fact :)
